There's a blog entry over at Sun-Sentinel, which talks about a new tactic the team may use this offseason:

As the offseason unfolds, look for the Dolphins to lock up their top young players like Channing Crowder, Vernon Carey, Rex Hadnot and Matt Roth. This is something the Dolphins haven't done much of in recent years.
But expect the new brass to identify good, young talent and sign them to contract extensions despite having to pay more for a second- or third-year player than they normally would have.
I think this is a great idea, and long overdue. The ability to lock up the team's young talent is vital for it's long term success. And it's better to do it now while the cap is inflated. We may pay them more in the short term, but will likely save on them over the long term. It's essential that the team is able to keep the talent that it grooms.

yeah I like that idea, the eagles do this a lot so they don't lose players to free agency

Sounds great, we need to lock up our good young players for the future.

We traded him, on purpose, for a phenomenal return. You can stop crying in your cereal now.

I'd like to see whoever we draft with that pick give us the same production - it's likely that won't happen. On top of which we strenghtened our main opponent, good thinking!

great! It's about time we have someone other than idiots running the show.

go randy cam.

All 4 of those guys need extensions stat.

when you develop your younger players, and keep them in the system, it enables you to develop team cohesion, which has been lacking for some time in miami.

you can't take a bunch of old free agents, and blend them into a team. you have to build through the draft and keep the players you draft.

2 TDs during his tenure. He was a fan favorite no doubt, but only 1 receiving TD and one on a Kickoff return. I think we'll do just fine with an additional 2nd round and 7th round picks as 2 TDs is pretty matchable.

Yes, lets convienently ignore how he lead the team in receptions this past season. If we should have traded anyone for a 2nd, it's that scrub Chambers. Oh wait - there's no way in hell anyone would give a 2nd for him. Glad he's still leading the way for our receivers!

didn't welker say he was happy to be gone, and used to look across the field and wish he was on the patriots? i swear i read that somewhere, but i don't know if it's true.

either way, i would way rather have a second rounder. but if he did in fact say that, how can you guys continue to criticize the trade?

Semedi, we got a 2nd & 7th for an undrafted #3 slot reciever.

I will miss Welker's heart and metal but it was great deal for us.

Even with all of Welker's effort and production, this offense scored 16 points a game. It's time to shake things up. It's been time. It's about time.

A 2nd and a 7th for Welker is at very worst an even trade, and quite arguably a big steal. The guy had 687 receiving yards and had mediocre return stats last season. If you drafted a WR in the 2nd round and he did that, it would be a disappointment.

It's also quite arguable that Wes Welker has reached or is pretty close to his ceiling in terms of production. His return skills have obviously declined with his additional role as a receiver, and he's a 180 pound receiever who does not shy away from contact. Saban and Co. also at one point were concerned about his workload, resulting in them bringing in Kelly Campbell.

I dont think that is a blanket statement you can make. Hadnot and Crowder have been starters, but have not been all that amazing. Roth hasnt been a starter but has looked like he's the real deal. You've got to be realistic whether or not those are solid, but entirely replaceable players not worth holding onto post-rookie contract, or future bedrock players.
