It's all kind of a joke to me. Just go back to the old way where both teams use the same balls, problem solved.

Ironic how many rule changes have been made that involved the Patriots. And that's how this rule was put forth in the first place.

What a joke. So, Peyton and Tommy Boy lobbied the league to let them break their balls in and one of them broke the league's balls instead? The easy answer is to make them use freshly unwrapped brand new balls. The second easiest answer is to put a strip of nonslip tape over the inflation hole to make it apparent that it was not tampered with. (Tamper-proof sealing tape leaves an indelible mark, so it isn't possible to remove it and put it back.,) Then have the official write the number over it, partly in the ball, partly on the tape.

The NFL's response? Come up with more (just as easily to circumvent) rules so the public things they actually give a crap. This could have been resolved with a team fine the week of the Super Bowl has it been out into its proper level of importance and the villain been less of an egomaniac than Tom Freaking Terrific.
