CB Charles Ealy out of UNLV has declared for the Supplemental Draft, as has LB Michael Tolbert out of Baylor, DE Jerome Walker out of Toledo, and RB Ivory McCann out of Texas Tech.

McCann is TINY, 5'8" 165 to 170 pounds, but he's FAST, consistently timing in the 4.3 range and sometimes faster than that. He also was a track star in high school and broke several state records. He has been a gifted kick returner in college and he figures to try and find a Charlie Rogers type role in the NFL.

Tolbert and Walker don't sound particularly exciting. Tolbert is 5'11" 240 pounds, so Saban will probably not look at him even as an undrafted FA. Walker is 6'4" at 257 pounds and there's not much information on him.

The guy I like the sound of is CB Ealy. Supposedly times in the 4.45 range, and supposedly he shut down his receivers against Tennessee and Wisconsin, to the point where they stopped throwing to him.

Former UNLV senior cornerback CHARLES EALY (#20) has officially petitioned the NFL for entry into next month's Supplemental Draft... his paper work and transcripts had been turned into the NFL office for final review, and official approval came back earlier this morning between 10-11AM (PCT)... originally recruited as a wide receiver by Fresno State out of high school, he made the transition to cornerback in junior college, and then grabbed a starting position last spring with the Rebels... played in ten games, as a junior, recording 31 tackles, one pass breakup and one forced fumble... he ran between 4.45 and 4.47 in the 40... which was recorded on a grass surface at Central Oklahoma earlier this spring, which was attended by two NFL teams... had intended to transfer to the Division II program, but could not get academically cleared in time to be eligible for the fall... has also done between 15-18 reps of 225 pounds... his official arm and hand measurements were not available, but he wears XX gloves... has been measured at between 5106 and 5110, 202 to 212 pounds; was 5106, 212 pounds at the spring workout... very good upper body build for his size, resembles more of a former RB body type than wide receiver... pretty flexible; has been as high as 212 pounds, but will likely settle in around the 200-pound mark for this workout... his top games from last season included BYU, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Iowa State... shutdown the opposing receivers versus both Tennessee and Wisconsin, so teams started to throw away from him... has played mostly on the field side... works best as a bump and run defender and shows fine aggressiveness... his struggles were often associated with the academic side of college life... "(I) would always focus on football, not really enough into the class work side of things", said Ealy, as part of a 20-minute interview conducted last evening... despite his academic issues at UNLV, he did record a 24 on the Wonderlic in his first attempt... he was late for a team bus, which was scheduled to leave for the Colorado State (November 13th) contest, as he overslept, but there is no other record of any off-field issues with him... "(I) was always thinking a lot about how I was doing or getting behind with my studies... it would sometimes carry over to my work outs... so now (mentally) I am getting ready for all the physical work that lies ahead of me and becoming straight by not having any outside issues", as Ealy has been working out in the Los Angeles area with a trainer and several current NFL players... gave straight forward answers to any/all tough questions... takes criticism well and takes responsibility for his actions and lack of progress in the class room... he intends to hold a "Pro Day" workout on Friday, JULY 8th, starting at 1PM in the Los Angeles area, so that scouts/coaches attending the morning workout for USC defensive tackle Manuel Wright, can easily attend his workout... those who need him to complete paper work or interviews can arrange those for the days leading up to that event... he will also have results of a full physical/medical examination available at that time, as well... please contact his agent for more information, including time, date and location of his workout.

BTW I wasn't necessarily suggesting spending a draft pick on any of these guys. Undoubtedly some of them will fail to get drafted. We can make an effort to get them as undrafted free agents.

All our below fringe prospects who probably won't be drafted. Ealy might garnering some interest. Opinion

Add them to the list and you have so far:

1. DT Manuel Wright
2. WR Roscoe Crosby
3. LB Chad Anderson
4. CB Charles Ealy
5. LB Michael Tolbert
6. DE Jerome Walker
7. RB/KR Ivory McCann

I don't know if your list was supposed to be ordered, but I would order it like this...

1. DT Manuel Wright
2. CB Charles Ealy
3. WR Roscoe Crosby
4. LB Chad Anderson
5. DE Jerome Walker
6. KR Ivory McCann
7. LB Michael Tolbert

Well it wasn't intended but I would switch Crosby and Ealy around. (Just opinion due the combination of size and speed Crosby has) I also like Anderson's intangibles and size. He would be an interesting FA pickup.

I think Ealy is far more polished. You have to remember that Crosby hasn't played football in about 3 years.

Hey do you know why Ealy had intended to transfer to the Division II program? I know it said (GBN) that he could not get academically cleared in time to be eligible for the fall but why was he leaving UNLV. I haven't seen any tape on him even though I had watched Jamaal Brimmer. His numbers don't jump out to me but his physical size looks great...any insight?

Yeah I know but I'm way more intrigued with Crosby.

Ealy sounds pretty intriguing. I'd get a scout out there but no doubt Saban knows him in and out. But I don't think we need a developmental CB right now. We need a veteran who knows his place and can start on call.

Not so sure. We have one developing corner this season, now that Poole is out for the year. Just Travis Daniels, and even he is in similar boat as the veterans because he's working in a system he already knows so at this point he either gets better as an athlete or he stays the same. The other guys, Mario Edwards, Sam Madison, and Reggie Howard are all vets that probably have about no upside once they've learned the system.

So basically, in the absence of Poole, we don't have enough room among the cornerbacks for positive surprises. Ealy could inject a little bit of that.

For what its worth, Kiper did not have any of the four on his "watch" list for high spots next year. By contrast Manuel Wright was projected as the 13th best Dlineman for the 2007 draft.

Early does sound intriguing, I'm still kind of hoping that roundtree is that other CB with some upside, Madision mentioned him as one who can play when Poole got hurt. Actually he was the first CB Madison mention when asked about the position. It kind of surprised me with Howard on board. Roundtree had some good PS games last year, I'm curious to see if he still got something. I don't think we lack talented players on this team in the secondary at cb, but they lack experience and that's the ? for them all.

I still think we won't take anyone in the supplemental draft, I'd be shocked to see us take Wright and he's supposedly a lock to be drafted.

I went to a few UNLV games last year and am somewhat familiar with Ealy. He only played one year here, as far as I know. I don't remember him from 2003. After the BYU game John Robinson singled out Ealy for a terrific game. I remember he stripped a WR very late in the game on what looked like the go-ahead TD. But I can also visualize that long 70 or 80 yard TD run by Alex Smith down the left sideline when Utah destroyed UNLV. Smith ran a bootleg and put a basic move on Ealy early in the run, leaving Ealy completely flatfooted.
