Just a thought but why don't we do the 3-4 defense next year? If we have a bundle of LB's it might be a good move. Is Chester man enough to be a nose tackle for us? Now don't go off the handle on me here this is just fun speculation that's all.

It takes a special type of DT to play Nose Tackle. I personally see a younger and healthy Tim as more of the type than Chester, but I admit I'm no expert on the subject.

Just remember -- what looks like a LB surplus goes right back to a tight LB situation if we lose two of our three starters in the offseason...

Very true but from what I understand about the 3-4 ( and I'm no expert here ) A guy like JT would actually play inside LB in this formation. Three big guys in the middle and our fastest linebacker ( Greenwood ) on the other side.

We don't have the players to play a 3-4. Two of our most important defenders, Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas, are both 4-3 players. Also, we don't have the type of DT you want at NT, we don't have anyone who would be a good DE in a 3-4, and our linebackers are too small for a 3-4. This is a 4-3 team.

Just playing around with the idea. Can anyone figure out a way it would work for us??

Jason Taylor wouldnt be a reason why we wouldnt switch to the 3-4, he would be a reason WHY we would. He's got the speed to cover, the size and strength to shed blocks, and he'd be lined up at a wider angle, helping use his speed, which would be above average for 3-4 pass rushing OLBs, much less DEs.

The problem is, the other players. You need big linebackers for a 3-4. Look at the Steelers or Patriots. Your linebackers need to be able to take on a linemen some of the time and still be effective. Zach Thomas, Eddie Moore, Morlon Greenwood, Tony Bua, Derrick Pope..Those are all entirely too small. The only linebackers who ISNT, and is big and strong enough to shed tackles consistantly is Seau.

The only way I could see the 3-4 as helpful would be a pre-snap kind of thing, like the Tiger Defense. It would have to be against a 2 WR set kind of thing, though. The idea would to be to screw up O-linemen blocking assignments.

A running play wouldnt be too helpful.

- You have to move in FA to get some fairly large LB's , one of which can rush from the outside. I hate saying it , but I think you would be retooling nearly all of your front 7. I do think that they could at times switch into a 3-4 on some plays with the people they have for a few plays during games if they wanted to get some of those LB's on the field.

That's the rub I guess our LB's are too small. Do you mean weight or height?

You need big DE's, big and versatile OLB's, and a monster at DT. The fins did try that pseudo 34 with taylor out as an OLB but all he ever seemed to do was drop back in zone coverage. Dont know if he could handle playin OLB.
