NFL Draft Lottery for #1 Pick (Speculation)

If the NFL does a draft lottery I would hope it is not like the NBA. What I would love to see is something like this:

Teams who finish in the bottom eight in the league are lotteried for picks 1 through 8. The next eight teams are lotteried for picks 9 through 16 and the remaining teams are lottiered for picks 17 through 32.

This would spice up the draft and still give help to the bottom feeders making sure last place picks no lower than 8th and make certain the super bowl winner would pick no higher than 17th.

The NFL can't just change and makeup rules midseason... A move like this could only happen during the offseason, after the draft.

Exactly, it has to be voted on, so it can not happen this year.

It wont happen. If it does, it wont be for the 2012 draft.

For one, there is no way to prove that a team tanked a season. This goes double for Miami as we clearly have a coach and GM fighting for their jobs. There is no validity at all to people tanking seasons.

Two, Goodell and his cronies can't punish people for simply doing a bad job. They couldn't punish Matt Millen, Al Davis, or Mike Brown(who all had multiple years of destroying their team). If a team wants to be run a certain way, even if it appears like tanking, they cant really step in. Keep in mind, teams sit their starters and possible lose games because of it. While Goodell did come in and change the schedule to a minor degree, he didn't jump on teams or change the entire format.

Three, it could throw off the competative balance of the game.

Four, despite popular belief, "Suck for Luck" is a fan movement. And if Goodell has shown anything, its that he has no problem ignoring the fans. He ignored all the Tebow drama(that is still going on), he will ignore the Luck drama.

Five, Nublar and Skapephin hit the nail on the head, they couldn't change it before the next draft. While they have 2 months after the season ends, there is no way they could rip it apart and sell the idea to the owners and NFLPA in time. Goodell might make a tweak or two, but nothing like making fundimental changes, which this would be. If they were going to do something drastic, it would take years of preperation. Heck, i dont think the owners would agree with it unless it took years to set up and execute the idea. Just throwing it together before April(especially with the order already established) would never pass. They would wait until every team has a fair chance before implementing it, and that would mean waiting until after the draft and every team is 0-0.

And six, the most important point, the nfl draft makes a killing in money. The owners love it, the tv stations love it, the players love it, and the fans love it. Its literally a win for everyone. Nothing is going to happen that could screw that up, especially this coming offseason.

I get that some people dont want us to draft Luck. I get that some people are very cynical because our record. But some of these suggestions are very wild and people have to remember that those in charge are not Dolphins(or whatever team) fans and are more concerned about the league as a whole. Football was around before Andrew Luck and will be after Andrew Luck. No one is going to redraw the entire offseason just because Luck might declare.

Just wanted to add, concerning the draft format, something similar has happened before.

Note the dates:
The new draft order will apply to every round of the draft. Under the new format, which will take effect in 2010, the order of teams not in the playoffs is still based on record -- i.e., the team with the worst record will receive the No. 1 draft pick....
The competition committee recommended the change -- which the owners passed 32-0 -- after watching the San Diego Chargers go 8-8 as a division champion in 2008, then win a game in the playoffs. But the Chargers drafted ahead of teams that didn't make the playoffs, and well ahead of the Indianapolis Colts, whom they beat in the playoffs.

And the article was written in March 2009. So the "abuse" happened in 2008. The owners voted in 2009. And the changes were made in 2010.

The only time I liked the lottery was when the Devils moved up to take the best D-Man in this years NHL Draft, after Luck is Phin, the lottery can be put in place.

Why the heck would the NFL want to be in any way looked at like the NBA...Keep it just the way it is..Worst team gets the best pick and Best team gets last pick.
