The common theme among these people who spoke on condition of anonymity is that the Dolphins were basically a flawed team that somehow convinced themselves they were winners. These NFL people gave the credit for that primarily to the coaching staff.

“They did it with smoke and mirrors,” one club executive said. “Good for them. But if they think that’s the formula for extended success, that won’t work, I can tell you that.”

I like Armando, but the daily cold water articles are getting a little old.

Looking from the outside in at the Dolphins. Pretty spot on.

Yeah it's not wrong at all, it just seems like Armando is good for a '**** on the Dolphins' post every day recently. It just gets a little tiring to always focus on negatives. We all know the deal with this team. We don't need it rubbed in our faces.

I don't care if they won with pixie dust I give the staff and team credit for winning 10 games.

Yes there are area's of concern but they appear to be working on them . We'll have a better idea what we've got after the draft.

There's no doubt we overachieved last year and in some cases got lucky, we won't be sneaking up on anyone this year......we better hope that they import a ton of that pixie dust.

We had a pretty banged up team last year. Losing one of your best defenders and your starting qb. If we were relatively healthy at the end of the year we would of given the Steelers all they could handle.

You think I care how they did it? They were 10-6. I'll take that any day of the week if they win by 2-0 every game.

Are there flaws? Yes. Most teams have flaws. All of us here are aware of what needs fixing. I'll be damned though if anyone tries telling me last year was bull****.

I just take that as a compliment to Gase. He made chicken salad out of chicken s***. Not to mention about 40% of the chicken s*** was injured.

Wish I could disagree, but I cannot. Gase is an excellent coach, but our roster is very flawed. We have good pieces, and even a nucleus on which to build. But, we have some huge holes still, and free agency frustrated me that we didn't address the right things.

Last year our OL proved better than anything Tannehill had in Miami before, but that was with Tunsil providing good LG play. With the Albert decision Tunsil vacates the LG position, and we didn't fill the hole. Bushrod was very bad last year, and I cut him some slack because he played through injury, but he's not good enough to start, and Larsen isn't much better. Both LG and RG are the spots we should have landed good FA's, allowing us to concentrate on the draft. On defense the only free agent moves I thought were necessary were re-upping Reshad and Kiko and adding Hayes. And even Reshad was a little overpaid. Branch didn't really earn the contract we gave him, IMHO. Timmons, while a definite upgrade, wasn't worth the money. It's not even the salary that gets me, it's that we guaranteed almost all of it for two years.

In the draft I'm hoping and expecting that we'll address LB and DE, despite those moves in free agency. But, we now have set ourselves up to have a worse OL than last year. Glad we re-signed Stills, but I'm still scratching my head about Julius Thomas. This is an epic TE draft class, and we look set to miss it for the future captain of the IR. Speaking of the Injured Reserve, I guess we're not cutting Koa Misi. There's another LB with a spotless record of INT's and forced fumbles ... because who needs takeaways anyway?

Kudos to Gase for all he and the staff did last year. Heck, we had one of the worst ranked defenses in the league and our DC got a head coaching job from John Elway for a team that is loaded with defensive talent and needs an offensive injection. While this year's team will be better at stopping the run, we may see a lot more games that look like last year's Baltimore Ravens game ... because none of our LB's can cover well, and this is a passing league. But, if our secondary stays healthy, we'll definitely be improved.

The mirrors may still be here, but the smoke has dissipated, and this year Gase is going to have to plug those holes or it could get ugly.

If our O line play regresses, everything else goes to crap. Hoping they know what they're doing. Article is garbage btw, we won because we cutdown on sacks/sack-fumbles, had a bruising runner, had a legit deepthreat in Stills.

What?...now were gonna criticize a team for
overachieving?

Fact is...when healthy this offense was pretty loaded...and there is some top talent on defense as well, just some holes that needed filling.

Depth was also an issue for this football once injuries hit heavy.

These are all issues that will be improved on...not sure I get the point?

Good point on the depth Bluefin. That's not talked about enough.

If the author was just trying to say the Phins did not have the horses, I'd agree. But that just means the coaching staff made the most out of what they had, that's not a bad thing. Hell, they would have likely had an 11th win had Stills not had a brain fart in Seattle. Smoke and mirrors....nah.
