NFL needs a draft lottery

So lets say we legitimately finish 1-15, would you would be OK with the Colts purposely tanking and going 0-16 to grab Luck out from under our noses? I think its pretty naive to think this won't or couldn't happen. There is a reason the NHL and NBA implemented a draft lottery

Yes I would be fine with that. We can talk about hypothetical situations all day. The fact remains going by record at least has a baseline measuring stick that determines a teams position.

I am not sure why you think teams are so willing to tank. I will use the 2009 browns as an example. they had one win with 4 weeks left and they won 4 straight taking them out of contention for the number one pick. Professional sports is a business, but its sports nonetheless and I don't think these guys are as willing to tank as most of the people around here think.

I am not saying that a team may not pack it in with one week left, but anyone who thinks an entire nfl roster will decide to tank the season by week 5 is an absolute moron.

Wow - compare the nhl and nba lotterys. My word - I am not even talking about a hot buttn isssue and people are on the Defensive LOL- these are not hypothetical issues - tanking is disgusting as is faking injury - mark these words we will hear talk of a lottery during and after the season

No player is a sure thing worth tanking a season for.

Of course - but you didn't read fro the beginning... Teams that would consider tanking won't do it till the final weeks of the season not in week 5 -6 even 9 and 10...

And no "players" won't tank but FOs can adjust line ups and make bonehead personnel decisions...

Many bad teams have players just wanting the season to be over w/, they aren't necessarily tanking but they give up on the season no matter who is available.

I don't think anyone disagrees that we may hear talk and you may be right they COULD implement the system. That does not mean its a good system or the right system.

The only thing worse than tanking for draft picks would be throwing games when betting is involved. The fact remains this is not really an issue bc it does not commonly happen and I think you will see that by the end of the year. If the Colts and Chiefs end up 0-16 and 1-15 respectively then in all likelihood they are just that bad. The only game this yr. in jeopardy of being tanked is oct.9 when the colts play the chiefs.

Most sports fans have played sports at some level. Let me ask you this have you ever tanked a game or whole season for that matter? I realize no draft picks were at stake but the integrity of the game and competitive nature remains.

If 5 or 6 teams wind up with 2 wins or less I will bow down to your tanking conspiracy theory.

Right, and the effect of teams tanking in a league where teams play 82 games per year is a lot greater than a 16 game season. That infamous 1984 NBA season which lead to the NBA employing the lottery that very next draft had teams basically tanking 40+ games. The funny thing about the 1984 NBA draft is teams weren't tanking for Jordan but were tanking for Olajuwon. The Bulls lost the tanking race but still ended up with the best player, even though Olajuwon turned out to be the hall of fame player every one wanted.

I think Houston can live with their pick. The Nets, however, drafted Sam Bowie in the #2 spot. Ouch.

There's nothing wrong with how the draft order is chosen in the NFL. The ****tiest team getting the highest pick is fair IMO.

How well do you think it would work if a draft lottery were already in place and we finish 4-12 this season only to have the Patriots or Jets wind end up with the number one pick? Draft by record is the only chance for teams who aren't very good to get better.

The current system sucks because why should a team be rewarded for sucky play or terrible management? I never understood it. And then you have a situation where a team makes the playoffs year after year but then they have a bad season because of injuries (like the colts) so they get the first pick. just terrible. a lottery is not the answer.

the team with the best record who didn't make the playoffs should draft first. it would have been the giants this past draft. then the team with the second best record who didn't make the playoffs ... Tampa. etc. this would make every team play hard until the end.

Maybe not yet but who's to say we've seen the best player to play football yet. Maybe in 5 years time there'll be a QB coming out of college that has 90% completion and 100 tds to5 ints and has Vicks ability to run the ball.

Two years ago when your Jets faked an injury to get a break against the Phins I was livid I said at the time it was a huge loophole that needed to be addressed but most had no problem with it. "Its just gamesmanship"

The NFL was embarrassed by what happened Monday but it could have been so much worse. Imagine if a team would have done it 30 times during a Superbowl, it would have made the NFL look like a joke.

Why are people so defensive over the current draft process anyway? There isn't a huge difference in the skill level between the bottom 3 or 4 teams, luck has a lot to do with who finishes last, why not have a little luck determine who gets the first pick? Plus there are other things you can do to ensure the team that would have finished last gets a fair shake if you're really that concerned about parity, for example if Carolina would have lost out on the first pick then give them another pick at the end of the first round or something.

I just don't see the downside of a lottery but on the other hand if you leave it as is you're allowing teams to control who they pick by doing the easiest thing to do in professional sports: lose games.

It was Portland not the Nets.

That's right! Don't know what I was thinking. Either way, passing on Jordan for an all-time top-5 Center is understandable (and the right pick at the time). Passing on Jordan for Bowie is painful. Portland recently made a similar mistake - passing on Durant for Odom. I said at the time that Odom will never be a star player and that Durant will. TERRIBLE pick. You don't pass on a sure-fire star for a player with limited offensive abilities - regardless of the position.

Luck might not even come out next year, the best thing for him is to wait again to see who has the first pick.
Panthers had the first pick and he said **** that im going back to school.............
