New England Patriots
Team Wins Over - Under 12 Wins

Biggest Story for the Pats:

The Patriots have the rings, the experience, the legacy, and even the players, so they are destined for another great year, right?

The Patriots are still lead by Bill Belichick, but much of his coaching staff has changed teams, again. After the 2004 Super Bowl win for the Patriots, many of the coaches bolted to cash in on the success. This off season, 2 years since the best regular season of all time, key parts of the patriots coaching staff has left again. First, it was Scott Pioli, Bill Belichick’s follower since the 1992 Season, and has pushed Belichick’s agenda in the front office. This will be a long term loss for the Patriots and Belichick. But the biggest off season loss may have been Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. McDaniels did a terrific fill in job after Charlie Weis left for the prominent Norte Dame job. He improved the Patriots offense by putting in the spread offense. McDaniels looks to employ the same scheme with his new Head Coach position in Denver. As good as Belichick is, this will affect his team. In 2005, the season following the last wave of assistant coaches leaving, the Pats won 4 fewer games than the previous year. This may be overlooked by the hype of the return of super star Tom Brady. The Patriots were plagued by injuries in 08, which meant starting 45 different players for Belichick. He shouldn’t expect that kind of plague this year, but wins may be harder to come by than most think.

Off Season Moves:
This is where we give you an analysis of the teams offseason moves. A majority of this information is restricted to free agents and trades. We will rarely cover the draft. It is not our job to “grade” the draft classes. However, it will be included if the player drafted is expected to play a vital role for the team. For a complete list of the teams acquisitions and departures, sign up at SquaresWanted dot com and get the electric copy of the entire NFL Preview, including AFC East and the Dolphins

Acquisitions:
Fred Taylor, RB; Chris Baker, TE; Joey Galloway, WR; Al Johnson, OL; Greg Lewis, WR; Alex Smith, TE; Shawn Springs, CB; Tully Banta-Cain, LB; Leigh Bodden, CB; Damane Dockett, DT; Nathan Hodel, LS;

Departures:
Matt Cassel, QB; Jabar Gaffney, WR; Lamont Jordan, RB; Rodney Harrison, S; Ellis Hobbs, CB; Mike Vrabel, LB

The Patriots have made many, many moves this offseason, including a huge draft class. Rookies will have to make an impact because quantity doesn’t improve the quality in the Patriots case. The biggest loss is easily Matt Cassel but it was obvious for financial reasons that New England could not keep both QBs. Shawn Springs is the only upgrade for this team. He is a bigger name than ability at this point in his career, and will be tested in this aggressive 3-4 defensive scheme that the Patriots run. Linebackers must bring the heat on the QB meaning that Cornerbacks and Safeties have to stay close to their man long enough for the heat to affect the play. Overall this offseason, the Patriots neither improved nor hurt their team.

Buy or Sell: Against the Spread
For each team this season we are comparing the teams 2008 Against the Spread record against our prediction of the teams 2009 ATS Record. If we think the team will IMPROVE against the speard, we will BUY. If we think they will have a worse record against the spread in 09 over 2008 we will SELL.

Sell: After Matt Cassel surprised the public and line makers, the Patriots went 9-7 ATS in 2008-2009 Season. With Tom Brady back under center, the Patriots will be surprising nobody. They have high expectations and I would not expect them to have a winning season against the spread this year. They are -1000 favorites to win the AFC East; this is a signal that they will be large favorites against all their division rivals, and a majority of all their games. With a defense aging quickly, it will be hard for the Patriots to keep winning 11+ games a year. The One bright spot on the Defense is the Jared Mayo, but otherwise the D may struggle. All the pressure will be on the offense, and that is too much.

That's a pretty reasonable examination of the Pats..it's prety honest in it's assessment. The Pats will be tough because of their experience, but they do have holes.

Seems like some Josh fan wrote the article. they make it sound like in 03-04 SB year brady never used a spread offence.

The only part I found somewhat accurate was about the spread. From the first game on the spreads will get bigger and become that much harder to cover. What will the avg be by the end of the year? +11? +15?

As to Springs being the only potential upgrade, I think Bodden is the best pickup (prior to yesterday at least, with the addition of Burgess).

Bodden >>>O'Neil or Hobbs
Galloway>>Gaffney
Taylor>>Jordon
Lewis>>Washington

The above might not be typed on paper but the saying still applies..........

And if I had a dime every time the media darling was hyped to win their division and has - shall we say -- FLOPPED big time,, I would need a triaxle dump truck to hold all of them!

The patsies have more holes than they or their fan base will admit to..

Really? Do show us these holes.

The DB are by far better this season.
The LBs are faster and younger.
The D-Line has better depth.
The O-line has better depth.
The WRs have better depth.
The TEs have better depth.
The RBs a heathy to start. and Fred Tayer is a major upgrade from LaMont Jordan.

I would say that we have 2 "questions" going into camp

1. Who wins the starting job out of Bodden, Springs, Wheately and Whilhite.

2. How well Woods plays

Our ILB position is reasonably good
Safeties are sound with a lot of potential (Chung, Meriweather)
D-line continues to be the best 3-4 D-line in the league.

On the Other side of the ball we're probably doing alright

WR - Pretty good I'd say
TE - Little bit questionable, but isn't a position that the patriots rely on to drive the passing game
RB - Same as every year (Glass)
Oline - Good with the potential to get better, I'm hoping that Volmer beats Kaczur out for the starting Job

The AFC East is going to be tough week in and week out. They use this against the dolphins alot but ignore the Pats as if they didnt have an easy schedule as well last year.

New England is all Hype now. Too much movement in too many key areas where NE won games in the end because they had experienced knowledgable and talented players to come through in the end----> character. You may have new "potential" talent, but they have not done what previous regimes have and it was proven last year. You had one guy who ended up proving he could do what Brady did and is now gone. Who is backing up? As Brady gets older with that injury (think Culpepper), it gets more difficult to make it through a season (New England has the 3rd toughest schedule statistically).

If the Pats had as difficult schedule last year as they did in 2007 (most difficult in history at that point, based on SOS in 2006), they would have been 9-7 at best with Cassel. He was a good qb, but he's no Brady, or do you think the Pats would have gone 11-5 with Brady? Not me. I'd figure 13-3 if not 14-2.

Brady & co already went 16-0 against a very difficult schedule in 2007. This years schedule is not as hard as that one was, at least on paper.

Pats always have 'potential talent' coming thru every year, in FA's and Rooks. Change is constant in the NFL.

This year, the offense is basically unchanged, with a few new toys for Brady to play with in Galloway, Smith, Baker, Lewis & Taylor. Theyu replace guys like Jordan, Evans, Gaffeny; all team players but nothing special. They've added depth to the OL, adding new Olinemen that are looking very good in camp, but will likely have time to learn and back up Kazcur & Neal.

Defensively, the newcomers (Butler, Chung, Bodden, Springs, now Burgess) replace guys that were with the team one or two years max. Time will tell just how much losing Harrision and Vrabel will hurt, though they had lots of practice the last few years with missing Rodney.

I'm not going to tell you leading the AFC East isn't an accomplishment, because it is.
It is something to be proud of buuuuut
  1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
  2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
  3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
  4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
  5. Strength of victory.
  6. Strength of schedule.
  7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
  8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
  9. Best net points in common games.
  10. Best net points in all games.
  11. Best net touchdowns in all games.
  12. Coin toss
This doesn't have any bearing on whether you're the better team

You make it sound like the fishies won the division outright. It came down to the 4th tie breaker which meant you guys won one more afc game than the Pats did.
