Hopefully the NFL's new "sellout" standards will allow the Dolphins to continue to avoid blackouts, even with crowds like this.

Last season, the Miami Dolphins faced something they hadn't had happen since 1998 - a local market blackout. Owner Stephen Ross, and several local companies, bought out thousands of tickets over the course of the season to ensure the Dolphins' "sellout" streak continued, and the fans in Miami would still be able to watch their team on TV.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal this weekend, the NFL is looking for ways to turn that trend around.
Team owners have passed a resolution that starting this season will allow for local broadcasts of NFL games even when as few as 85% of tickets are sold. Under the new rule, each team has more flexibility to establish its own seat-sales benchmark as long as it is 85% or higher. To discourage teams from setting easy benchmarks, teams will be forced to share more of the revenue when they exceed it.
The league has seen a 4.5% drop in ticket sales since 2007, according to the WSJ article, and they are looking for ways to make the in-stadium experience more enjoyable for the fans.

It's simply unfair to blame the stadium experience for the dip in numbers over the years. Do you know what else could be attributed to it? HD TV! 1080P, 3D, 60 inches... $1500. You can watch it and feel it upclose versus taking a lot of time out of your Sunday while paying astronomical prices for beer and food.

Drop the price on concessions, and I promise you there'd be a positive reaction amongst ticket sales, especially the cheap seats. They obviously won't, since teams keep all their own concession money while sharing profits from tickets, but still.

There is not a single person here that would dispute me when I say WIN FOOTBALL GAMES. That is the crux man.

How about a bad economy, rising gas prices and inflation out the ass. A dollar doesn't go as far as it used to. Maybe they should lower the cost of the tickets and more people will buy them, especially for teams that put a crap product on the field.

Gee, go to the local sports bar and see EVERY NFL game in AC with reasonably priced food/beer or go pay 9 bucks a beer and another what? $20 bucks for something I'd get on the dollar menu at MCds plus the jacked up prices for seats? Pass. It's called free market economics, lower the prices and/or put a better product on the field and the people will come.

They make more money from TV deals than from the stadium...

It's a no brainer.

The owners make money anyway, its maximized with the most eyes watching from the couch.

The home experience is way better than the stadium experience...For the reasons you mentioned...

If they truly wanted to sell out home games.. then drop the F'n prices!! tickets, parking, concessions.. But no.. they hire stupid accountants to figure out whats the highest they can charge per ticket before it starts to detract from the amount of revenue that can make on any given home game.. Its now a business and maximized profits rule the game..

I was talking about the dip in stadium attendance year to year in the league, not just the Dolphins.

Its the prices.. Its no longer a blue collar sport where the working stiff can bring the family..

I am an old time Dolphin fan and know exactly why very few people attend games. BECAUSE THEY KNOW IT WILL BE ON TV, NO MATTER WHAT.
I was one of them, praying and hoping for someone to scoop up the remaining tickets so I would be able to watch the game.
I guaranty if they actually made the "black out" more strict and followed the NFL rule, the fans would have to go. I can only remember one time the "black out" was imposed. Myself, my father and my fathers friend drove far enough away to watch it at a bar. I was just a kid. One time I can remember in my whole life. I am 57 years old.
Now, I am certain it has happened more than once. But I would venture to say it has not happened but except in very rare conditions.
BLACK OUT GAMES AS REQUIRED BY THE NFL.
I have friends in Palm Beach, Pembroke Pines and the greater Miami area and they have plenty money. The only reason they do not go, is because they can stay home by the pool, the big screen TV and ****tails. That is the only reason they do not attend games. That is the only reason.

Black Em Out!

HD with DirecTV in the comfort of your home, can't beat that.

Drop the ****ing prices already. It's ridiculous seeing prices go up yet we are getting nothing more in return. Not even a decent football team. You really wanna try and charge me $8 for a beer? Suck it.

Hard to say what Miami's issue is but I'd bet money if 90% of the population in Miami was actually from this country it might be different. I don't really go to Miami anymore because I no speak Spanish or the other 25 dialects of it (used to have season tickets up until about 6 years ago).

Very few teams have the luxury of really "selling out" anymore and putting 70k+. Be prepared for more like 20k-30k type stadiums in the future..I think. NFL games are going to end up looking like American Rugby games.
