The NFL trade deadline is next Tuesday and unless I miss my guess, the day will likely come and go without a blockbuster to shake things up. That's the NFL, where significant midseason trades simply don't happen very often.
But let us dig deeper on the Miami Dolphins. I have no information whether they are shopping anyone or shopping for anyone. But my guess (again) is it would be somewhat difficult for Miami to get rid of some weight based on who they might offer, salary cap ramifications and, of course, compensation.
Three players the Dolphins could logically decide they would trade for the right compensation?
Wide receiver Brandon Gibson.
Guard Shelley Smith.
Defensive end Dion Jordan.
Again, I'm not saying these guys are on the trade block. I'm saying that if someone comes along and makes an attractive offer for any of these, logic dictates the Dolphins would listen. And there are logical reasons to consider each as viable on the trade market.

I really liked Gibson last season, but right now he's adding no value to our football team save for injury insurance -- which Rishard Matthews is also offering.

If we can get something in return for him, I'd pull the trigger.

Would tend to agree, didn't think that way at start of season, but this is where we are at. That being said doubt we make any moves.

You may get a late round pick for Hartline. I'd move him before Gibson. I'd try and move Ellerbe as well and gladly take anything offered.

do we have cap room to trade Dion?

not Hickey's player, move him to a 3-4 team for a decent return

Nobody for one is taking Ellerbee contract, plus he is injured. Gibson probably has minimal trade value since he has been injured quite a bit this year so not much for teams to salivate over.

The problem w. moving Gibson is that there really isn't a market for him, especially at trade deadline time.

How many teams are looking for a smaller, slower possession WR for their playoff runs? Not many.

Miami is one team that vastly overvalues possession WRs. We can call our WR corps "deep" when the only position it's deep on is slow, small possession WRs (exceptions being Wallace and now Landry). The only WR slot that is DEEP (replaceable w. a similar part) is nondescript, one-dimensional, slower possession WRs. Nobody is trading for that, imo.

Maybe a Cleveland will come along and give a 4th round pick for a Bess that does basically zero outside the historic Miami emphasis on slow, non-skilled WRs being given run (and getting some stats as a result), but that doesn't happen often.

Never, ever seen a team puff up nondescript talent at skill position yet not be able to recognize real talent when it's there -- like Bush, Wallace and Tannehill -- those kinds of players get picked apart, while the Bess types and Hartline and Gibson types get puffed to high heaven.

It's a head-scratcher.

For Jordan the cap hit doesn't matter. His trade value is plummeting. You would be lucky to get a 4th round pick for him now.

Firstly, I think the Dolphins have a pretty solid roster as it stands. Jeff Ireland laid parts of a good foundation and Dennis Hickey has in one year done an outstanding job of adding to it. I'm writing a Sunday column on the topic that will post Saturday so please watch for that.

Boy if there was ever a line that proves Ireland was Mando's source that included some quid pro quo involved this is it.

First, nobody is going to take that Hartline contract. Second, it's tough to trade him at this point for team chemistry reasons.

It would make sense but there is no wiggle room for the staff to risk anything. In a perfect world maybe you take the chance and trade Gibson for the long term benefit of the team but Hickey and Philbin are all about the short term right now.

A team would have to be desperate to give much for either of those 3 guys. Trading Jordan at this point makes no sense unless we get a 1st which we won't. Only wanny and Ireland made stupid trades like that.

I guess I'm the only guy who likes what Hartline brings. We aren't focusing on him as much so he isnt producing but he runs crisps routes. Gets open and makes the catch. The YAC issue is somewhat overstated

The Dolphins are on the hook for his 2014 salary and I believe there is no guarantee beyond this year. If I'm correct, its not a financial burden for a team to add him. He is not close to matching his output in Sherman's offense so his value to Tannehill is not as great as it was last season.

Though it's unlikely he is moved the point is I think Gibson adds more value to the offense.

It could be quite a trade if a team thinks itself lucky enough to get Dion "on the cheap" ... but I'm still too reluctant to give up on him. If you can make something already good, even better, like our DL depth, why not keep the guy?
I get the feeling we're going to have to let some go anyways next year with that line depth, possibly Odrick or someone else. Better to have Dion stay and see what you got in him than let him go.
