They are out of there and it is SAD. The have a rich history and great fans but unless they gte a new building it's over.
This is a carbon copy of the Quebec situation. Great young team right on the brink of breaking out. Where ever they end up, regardless of it being a hockey market or not, it will be a HUGE success because they are going to win and win big right away.
Remember, no one thought Colorado would be a sucess, they sold out for 10 straight years. Would that have happened if they were an expansion team? I highly doubt it.
Where do I want them to go? I want them to stay in Pittsburgh but since they are gone I want them in Southern Ontario (St. Catherines/Waterloo). they would be out of the Leafs/Sabres sphere of influence, the population base is huge and unserviced by the Leafs and it is already hockey mad. It would be HUGE.
I don't think Winnepeg is an option because of the lack of a large corperate base to support the team and fund the expansion of their new building.
If Canada is not an option then I want them in Seattle. It all depends on the political will of the people of Washington. They are voting on a building for the Sonics in a few weeks (I think) and if they get it they will need another tenant. Seattle is already a hockey market, it would add another West Coast team (something that is needed) and it would have instant rivalries with Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary (not to mention the California teams).
I get the feeling they will end up in K.C. though. Yes, K.C. already was a failed market (like Colorado) but they have a new building and like I said, the team is instanly marketable and will win.
I DO NOT want them in Oklahoma City. What league wants their best player, the future face of the league and his ascending team that could go on a run for a few Cups in the hockey hot bed of Oklahoma City?
I'm still hoping they stay in Pittsburgh but it looks bleak.
