It is different way to build a team. But, you must monitor the number of "projects" you have at any given time.
If you have too many "projects" at one position, you may set yourself up for a huge domino effect that could destroy your team. If you have an injury prone "project" who's dominating when playing but sometimes misses.... being backed up by a "project" with character issues..... more often, than not, when you "need" the character project to step in for the injury project... you may find yourself in a crisis if the character tends to act up at the wrong moment.
You still need quality, dependable guys all over the field.
I just see us reaching a "critical mass" with all these "project" players right now. We need more solid dependable guys for depth.
Culpepper's knee, M. Wright's issues, Allen's hip, Poole's knee, Traylor's health, Zach's health....
It's slowly piling up. And now, the "Vick" project.
Eventually, all of these projects start tying up key roster spots AND coaching resources.
Right now, more than anything we need dependable, quality depth at some critical positions. Namely, QB #2.
Like it or not, QB #2 will be the difference in us making the playoffs this year.
This speculation and hope that Culpepper will start week 1 is a pipe dream. As we edge closer to camp, then preseason and then the season, you're going to see QB as a HUGE weakeness.
I'll continue to say it, we need a solid vet who's been through the fire and to the playoffs. A proven commodity.
We need Kerry Collins.
We don't need another project in Harrington. And face it, he is a project by many regards: confidence, consistency and winning. He's not proven any.
And, as I said last year when we lost to the Jills and Jets early in the season... those early games can make or break a season.
We need a QB that can hit the ground running and can lead the locker room while Culpepper is recovering.
I'd hate to start the season and hear Culpepper's out 'till Week 9 with Harrington and Lemon as our depth chart.
Don't get me wrong.... I think Vick would be a nice "pet" project... but our coaches are going to have their hands full enough without another "project" running around.
