The Miami Dolphins are a rudderless ship, barely afloat each season with no clear idea on getting back to shore.

They needed a missed field goal from Cleveland's Cody Parkey in Week 3 to squeak out a win against maybe the worst team in football, and were embarrassed Thursday by the Cincinnati Bengals.

The 22-7 scoreline doesn't truly reflect the Dolphins' ineptitude, and there doesn't appear to be easy answers to their many questions.

Some of the blame falls on the shoulders of quarterback Ryan Tannehill, and rightfully so. Entering his fifth season as starter, he's yet to show the progress you expect from a highly paid franchise quarterback.

. . .

But it's not the main reason.

The Dolphins, despite hiring head coach Adam Gase and general manager Chris Grier, still have no discernible direction and appear to make decisions without any consideration for the long term. Such as:

  • Pay Ndamukong Sug $19 million a year without catering their system to his talents
  • Drop down in the first round of the 2016 draft, in exchange for underwhelming veterans Kiko Alonso and Byron Maxwell (who was benched against the Bengals)
  • Draft left tackle Laremy Tunsil after he fell in the draft due to a bong hit video - throwing their plan out the window - then play him at guard
  • Rescind the transition tag from Olivier Vernon, allowing one of the team's sole young defensive building blocks to leave
  • Forget about Lamar Miller to such a degree that he leaves in free agency to become a starter
  • Replace Miller with the oft-injured Arian Foster

When you look through the Dolphins' moves over the past few years, it's difficult to see how they all fit together.

Are they trying to win now? Are they building a veteran roster that will give Tannehill time to develop? Are they trying to be a pass-first offense, or a run-first offense?

What these moves have achieved is putting the Dolphins in purgatory. They aren't an experienced roster in win-now mode, and they aren't a young, up-and-coming squad.

. . .

This poor long-term vision can be attributed to a lack of clarity over who is truly steering this ship.

While Gase and Grier are in their first years in their roles, the work of Mike Tannenbaum, Miami's executive vice president of football operations, can be seen all over the roster.

. . .

So the worst news of all is that nothing in Miami is likely to change any time soon.

Tannenbaum will continue to focus on making headlines in the offseason, creating hope with big-name signings but failing to improve the roster, while Tannehill's contract means he'll be the club's starter in 2017.

So buckle up Dolphins fans. This ship is going to sink at some point, but it may not be for a while.

So true, but Miami can make Tannehill and July 1st designation and it will only be a 5 million dead hit.

Sometimes you amhave have to for the betterment of the team.

Agree, but the problems of this organization, go way deeper than just the QB position.

Dolphin's Ratings Keep Plummeting

By Barry Jackson

Dolphins’ Dade/Broward TV ratings continue to plummet to embarrassing levels, with Thursday’s 12.6 (combining CBS-4 and NFL Net) believed to be their lowest in many years for a prime-time Dolphins game, perhaps ever.

The Dolphins’ 14.0 average local rating through four games (equal to 14 percent of Miami/Fort Lauderdale homes with TV sets) is below last season’s 16.9 average, which was worst among all NFL markets excluding two-team markets New York and the Bay Area.

Every Dolphins game this season has drawn a lower rating than the previous one.

NFL TV ratings are down nationally this season, but the Dolphins’ declining ratings over the past several years suggest diminished interest because of the poor on-field product.

The Dolphins are 68-96 over the past decade plus

Going 1-15 or 2-14 will be more changes than qb. Honestly those records aren't gonna be impossible to see. Miami has very little wins left on the schedule.

While drafting a new quarterback would a silver lining, finishing with that high of a pick would highlight the dark cloud. After all, we don't have our 3rd or 4th round picks.

We can't even tank properly. :bobdole:

And who exactly will be our qb? I dont think you people realize how hard it even is to get someone of Tannehill's average level. Mr all world next hall of fame once in a lifetime qb prospects andrew luck has 82 yards and a pick through 3 qrts against the jags right now. How many wbs drafted since Tannehill are better than him? So before yoy say lets cut him and draft a qb just think theres probably a 90% chance that qb isnt even an improvement.

True and if they address all the other issues the QB position is still a problem and in dire need of an upgrade.

No worries guys, it's almost that time of the year again: Tannehill's annual garbage time performances and meaningless wins. Just enough for some here to again be fooled in believing he is "for real"...until he plays in games that matter again..

Good ballclubs are built from the inside out. Colts and Dolphins are perfect examples of how not to do things.

Don't worry our front office would trade down the #1 pick with a team around the 15-20 range to recoup those two picks in the middle of those rounds.

Of course when those rounds come the front would then trade away the 2nd and 3rd round picks of the 2018 draft to move up to the beginning of the 3rd and 4th round.

We are in good hands!

I honestly can't remember the last time I've seen the national media dogpile a single average player on a bad team as much as they have just dogpiled on Ryan Tannehill.

It's interesting.

LOL...really?? Have you been in a coma? Let's see.... Wentz, Prescott, Winston , Mariota, Carr, Garropolo, Wilson.....and you could throw in Osweiler and maybe (too early to tell) Siemian & Goff.
