what is the point of this?

I just read the 49'ers removed the franchise tag from Peterson and instead signed him to a 1-year deal.... what is the point of that? i mean, if they just stuck with the franchise tag they would at least get a 1st and 3rd compensation if someone actually offered, right? but who's going to offer a 1st and 3rd for Peterson?

so.... someone care to explain the logic here? (i know i am missing something)

Most likely to save money and keep him for another year. I bet they told him, your gonna be here either way so lets make this deal cap friendly so we can field a more competative team.

Also, they would get 2 first round picks if someone were to offer him, so the chances of that happining were slim to none.

He got hurt this year so he needs to prove hes still a top 5 outside linebacker from that injury...if he comes out and has a great season someone will pounce next year
