To be honest, I've been on the fence about Philbin since he was hired. I know 1 thing people like to point out is his clock management and his lack of killer instinct. Well today, he or Sherman (whoever was responsible for the play call) went for the jugular on that 4th and 5 play instead of punt and hope the defense holds Brady (which they likely wouldn't have). Great call by the coaching staff in that spot, and I'm not playing the result...I would have been pissed had they punted.

Also, great use of calling timeouts on defense during that final drive by the Pats. Let the D see how New England was set up. Not to mention calling the timeouts on New England's final drive of the first half, allowing us enough time to score right before halftime.

Props to the coaching staff for today's gameplan and game management. They, like our stud QB, are improving!

2 threads giving Philbin props (one of them created by me). I don't think you'll ever see an Ireland thread praising him.

Let's just say they're growing on me. Some curious moves by Ireland and Coach early on regarding Oline issues, game planning etc. but it may be coming together. Wins means they're doing something right and I'll jump on their bandwagon of support.

Lol. Sorry, did a quick scan and didn't see any. Still, my statement stands. I can't be happier for this team and coaching staff today! Now keep things rolling and hope for a Bengals loss tonight!!!

The offense played a very solid game against one of the most well coached and toughest to beat opponents in the league. I'll give the staff credit for the offensive output, and a victory over the Patriots down the stretch definitely earns some props for Philbin overall. I'm still concerned at the ability of this team overall to keep whatever opponent we are facing in the game until the final second, and while it happened today against Tom Brady instead of the practice squad QB's we've faced (and lost to!) at times, I still can't feel assured that Philbin and his assistants are capable of winning the percentage of games they should of games where their preparation and scheme has put them in position to win.

Completely agree on the time outs at the end of each half. That was a masterful use of time outs, especially at the end of the first half. They don't the TD otherwise.

Using the time outs on defense is not something if seen done very much. It is very smart to be as organized as possible. Props to Phylbin and Coyle.

People complaining about timeouts/clock management are idiots, they have no clue what they are talking about. They wouldn't know good clock management if it slapped them in the face. Don't listen to them.

People complaining he lacks killer instinct or plays not to lose or whatever you want to call are confusing the coach remaining aggressive and the offense (or defense sometimes) just not making enough plays late in games. That is the time you need your QB to elevate (like he did today) not deflate (like he did vs Buffalo and Carolina). That's not something you can coach, he either has it or he doesn't.

I would also add that a lot of people lose their lids over decisions that are virtual coin flips, like going for it on 4th and 5 today with everything considered was a virtual coin flip. Let him make the decision and live by it, you don't have to scrutinize every single decision as if its either brilliant or moronic. Generally the most controversial decisions (according to fans) coaches make are coin flips in the grand scheme of things. Personally, I think you should always choose the most aggressive option of every coin flip because it shows you have confidence in them and may give the team a boost.

Definitely no hate, which I enjoy saying at this point. Philbin did perfect and Sherman only had maybe 2 'guh' plays all day (like Keith Olberman would say).
Tannehill struggled early, made some crappy throws, then caught fire. That's his M.O. lately. He might have a stretch of mediocrity within a game, but once he gets it going..'Like a Surgeon..'

I have no love for Philbin, but if he can get this team to win the next 2 games and make the playoffs, then I'll look at him differently. I still hold him responsible for some early losses that should have been wins. He did okay today, but if pass interference had been called on that last drive there's no way that Miami would have won.

As for Sherman, I'd fire him even if Miami wins the Super Bowl! His offense was shut out in the second half of the first NE game, and shut out for 29 minutes of the first half today. Coyle, I'll cut him some slack since he's a new DC, but his schemes and playcalling can be poor at times. It was sickening to watch Brady march down the field because the defense was playing 10 yards off of the receivers. And, the run defense has gone downhill since he came in and changed the defensive scheme.

Case in point, gameday thread fans commenting on Philbin's use of timeouts before the half:

lol at miami calling a TO

do they really think they'll get the ball back and score before the half ends

oh, Joe. Sometimes you just tickle me pink

Stupid Philbin calling time outs. What will happen is instead of being down 10-0 at half, we'll be down 17-0 after a pick six or sack fumble.

New England was gashing us. Need the D to collect themselves. Hence the time out.

why are they calling timeouts

Great coaching philbin. Give NE those timeouts

Couldn't agree more. Philbin utilized his timeouts in the exact same manner at the end of the Carolina game. The only difference was that the defense did not make a stop on 3rd down in that situation. If the Dolphins hold on 3rd down, Carolina could kick the game tying field goal, but the Dolphins would've had about 1:20 remaining to win the game in regulation.

Because the defense didn't hold and Carolina scored a TD Philbin was lambasted by many on this site, even though Carolina had plenty of time to go for a TD had Philbin chose not to use his timeouts.

Bottom line was that Philbin played it correctly but the result did not work in his favor. A pure case of 20/20 hindsight.
