No names on jersey

I honestly don't see how taking names off the back of uniforms is going to help. You can have a great team concept with a name on the back of your jersey. However its the choice of the team and Good luck to Shannon he is off to a good start

I think it will help because it reduces individualization, which strengthens the team mentality. That's the reason Paterno did that at PSU for decades. He once benched a star RB (can't remember who) because he had a towel in his waistband that had his name and number on it.

Props to Shannon  When deconstructing a culture that fostered individual egos, this is a clear message IMO. My only caution for Canes fans is that, IMO, this will alter the type of athletic recruit that the U had always appealed to. That will clean up the image, but may make it more difficult to land the same quantity of top talent.

Good for him. Seems like he has things going in the right direction.

More of the flashy players who want there names on the back of there jersey's.

Yes. UM was always the best at getting the super talented player who wanted to be a star in the limelight. This move, which is exactly like what Paterno has always done, lets it be known that such a desire will no longer be fostered.

Sounds like Bob Knight when he coached my Hoosiers. His mentality was you play for the name on the front of your uniform and not for yourself. And it does work for the team concept that your coach is looking for.

I would not quite go that far

Glad to hear this. Miami players were playing for themselves more than they were for the team. Hopefully this makes them realize there playing for the University of Miami and not for themselves

I really don't buy all this crap. It's very cute, very "remember the titans". It makes for a good story. "Play for the name on the front not the back", like I haven't heard that in, oh, EVERY teen sports melodrama since the 1950's. Cue the Celine Dion.

Seriously, it builds individualization? Walter Payton used to wear a sweetness towel holder, towel and sweatband all with the word SWEETNESS and 34 brandished on them. He was one of the most selfless team players in the history of this game. Hasn't Shannon been pitching this whole family angle at the U? Okay, so lets take your family name off the back of your jersey.

You think you shave Dennis Rodman's hair and he becomes Mother Theresa? Bottom line is, if a guy is going to have an ego and play on his own, or play like a true bad *** who has his name on his jersey, he'll do it whether he's wearing his name, your name, Coach Shannon's name, or the next guys jersey name plate.

Sorry, I like what Coach Shannon is doing to the program, but I think this is very "done before".

Replace "builds" with "fosters".

You're welcome to your opinion, but please don't give me an exception to the rule to argue with general point. That's so annoying.

Family name? Do you honestly think that the majority of those guys are going to think that Shannon is slighting their family? C'mon

I has been done, because it works  Since when did you need originality to lead a group of young me? Nearly every leadership strategy employed by a head coach is either borrowed or altered from someone else. I'll take a legand's word for it.
