This is not taking blame away from anyone on offense or the incredibly awful play-calling, but I do believe that our defenses inability to get off the field on 3rd downs is hurting our offenses ability to get into any kind of rythm. We have had an awful time on 3rd downs this year. Today was definetly not the first time we've struggled on 3rd downs. An offense gets "cold" sitting on the sidelines. The Falcons were able to put together at least four 70-plus yard drives while our offense waited helplessly on the sidelines.
The play-calling has already been beat to death today. We know the play calling was atrocious. Let's repeat it again shall we. While I don't think our offense is predictable (because they sure surprise the hell out of ME!) it lacks any sort of rhyme or reason. Typically coaches have plays scripted to a certain point but those scripted plays go out the window when you give up so many yards and easy scores early in the game. BUT, in the case today, our game plan would have still been effective had we been able to stop the Falcons on third down and got the offense on the field. As bad as we played, we were never out of the game to the point where we needed to throw the game plan out and wing it. It's all relative. Your defense plays badly, you're playing from behind, your offense can't get on the field, the play calling is awful and we put ourselves in position to make mistakes instead of putting the ball in the hands of our 2 biggest strengths.
This team lacks rythm because the play calling lacks any creativity. Being a coach, I know the importance of setting up one play with another. You may run a play in the first quarter that is setting something up later in the game. Linehan doesn't do that. There is no reasoning behind the playcalling that I can see. If the offense is AWARE of what they are trying to set up when they are running a certain play, the game opens up to them better and it's much easier to get a rythm going. If they are completely clueless play after play, it's tough to get a rythm. I think that's pretty much what Ricky was eluding to after our loss to the Chiefs - saying the offense has no identity. He was right. I would rather do the RUN RUN PASS thing than what we are doing now because as boring and predictable as it is, at least the players know what's coming and hunker down and click a little.
In SHort, our offenses lack of creativity or reasoning in what it does, coupled with the defenses inability to cause three and outs (particularly early in the game) are causing this offense to struggle to get into a rythm. Just my opinion.
