I've always held the opinion that Jimmy Johnson left his work undone here mainly because he lost a popularity contest with Marino (both with the media, and with the fans) and didn't handle bad press very well as a result. For once, he didn't have the will to bench THE hero of South Florida, even though Dan was going backwards steadily.

As a huge Jimmy Johnson fan, I really was crushed when he resigned.

I'm sure many of you hate him (just like you give Ricky no slack for quitting), but... complete this sentence:

"If Jimmy Johnson remained coach after Marino's retirement, ... "

"If Jimmy Johnson remained coach after Marino's retirement, Jim Fassel may be our coach now"

...we'd be good enough to keep us fans thinking we were close to the Super Bowl, but just wouldn't quite reach it.

Jimmy was good in Dallas because of the Hershel Walker trade and because of the fact that there was no salary cap. Any coach would have won with the talent he was able to assemble in Dallas. His knowledge of the college ranks coupled with the gold mine of picks he got from Minnesota assisted him in putting together a great team in Dallas. When he came to Miami, he'd lost his grasp on the good players at the college level and started having poor drafts - being more successful on the defensive side of the ball. HAd Jimmy stayed on, we'd still be running a boring, vanilla, conservative, and predictable offense and staying in games with a good defense. In short: it would have been just like having Wanny - but maybe a little better.

I only ever want what is best for the team--doesn't bother me that Ricky maybe back or wanny is gone.. JJ was ok but a bit of a bully. Having said that he did seem to get the best out of players

If Jimmy was still the coach we wouldve won it all in 2002!! I still get sick to my stomach when I think about that season.....Thats the most talented team we have had in a LONG time and we went 9-7!!! Disgusting!! AAAAAAhhhhhhhhhh, didnt make the playoffs!!!! Lost to the Pats on a bunch of crazy BS(seemed like we were meant to lose that game all the bad stuff that happened)..plus that was the "Ray Lucas" year that he personally ruined!!!!!!!!!!!! The Bill's game was pure disgusting!! Thanks ray...may you burn in hell Ray!!!!!!!!!!! :fire:

..anyway enough fuming, yes If JJ wouldve been the coach with that talent!! Ricky wouldnt be rushing for 230 yds and us still losing!!

IMO Jimmy would of eventually found the right guys on offense. Jimmy built one hell of a defense here so I cant understand why some of you think he wouldnt of eventually found some stars on offense. Remember Wanny wasted 2 first round picks on Ricky which IMO Jimmy would not have done. I realize Jimmy missed with some picks but lets not forget the Wanny had 5 years on the job. In 5 years im sure Jimmy would have found some superstars just like he did for dallas.

If Jimmy had stayed:

1. We would have never picked up Ricky. Jimmy would still be ramming some scrub into the line on first and second downs and making the QB throw it on 3rd.

2. We would have gone through several QB's already, hoping to get lucky, but wont without a running game.

3. 62-7 would seem like nothing compared to his next playoff game.

Bottom line, JJ would have never lasted another 2 years anyway. We all would have tired of his promises, snake oil pitches, and December swoons.

He never could do it in the salary cap era.

Actually, I hated seeing JJ go. If RopeWeed had left in the same manner as JJ, I'd have the same feeling: disappointment, but no hard feelings.

I've thought of the point you raise, vis a vis, Marino. Maybe there's something there, but I don't think it can be seriously disputed that the death of his mom really took a lot out of him. I know when my Mom died, it took about four years for me to start feeling like my old self.

We would have won back to back Superbowls and he would be retired Wanny would be in his 2nd year as head coach.

I think Jimmy could have gone all the way if he had Ricky and allowed Dan to fully recover and come back!

He didn`t get much out of them against Jacksonville, did he?

no ur right there the team just laid down and died--that is the lowest i have ever felt as a dolphin fan--funny thing is in the previous game against the Seahawks they were brill as a team and done evey thing as per JJ wanted--the only other time i felt so low was when we lost to the 49 ers in SB, but then we were just outplayed by a better team---against Jax that was not the case

He would have been better than wanny,But I would rather have The Sabanator. :cooldude:
Jay Fiedler never would have started a game for the dolphins. :fire:
We wouldn't have the phrase "Pornstache"
We might have drafted 2 or 3 more karim abdul jablows
Marino and some of the others would have given him a "blanket party"
Ricky would have ran away to smoke weed before his first season :roflmao:
Seth Mckinney would have been promoted to "assistant manager in charge of french fries" by now. :roflmao:
There would be one more hair salon in miami still in business.
The phrase "You wont see me scratching my head in Miami" wouln't make me laugh my a$$ off  :roflmao:
But the #1 thing we would miss would still be Dan the man.

Fully recover, you`re kidding right? I love Marino as much as the next guy, but no way could I stand to watch him play another season. The guy was done.
