I completely understand what is meant when I keep reading that we are tanking. With the current roster, we will be hard pressed to win many, if any games at all. What we are doing is purging our roster or any and all players that will not be a part of the rebuilding process. We are starting from a literal ground zero. If there are more than 6 players from this current roster on the 2022 roster, I will be completely surprised. I believe this could have been done without trading Tunsil but we definitely have much more ammo to completely rebuild this roster. Remember the optimism after Tunsil magically fell to us in a cloud of smoke in 2016 and we made the playoffs with a b/u QB after our franchise QB tore his ACL late in the season? Over the next two seasons, mediocre coaching and personnel decisions made us crash back to reality and smack dab where we have been for the better part of the last 20 years, mired in mediocrity. For those lifelong fans that are in their 40s or older, we remember that we were at the beginning of the downside of Marino’s career when free agency started in the mid 90s. We rode Jimmy Johnson’s excellent defensive drafting into the middle of the first decade of the 2000s. After that, we attempted to improve our slightly better than average roster by free agency instead of doing a complete 3 year rebuild. The current management and coaching staff are finally attempting something that’s been needing to be done for decades now. I don’t like losing and I hope to win every game that we play but until we build a roster like the successful teams over the past 2 decades, we will continue to be mediocre and should not expect anything else record-wise. Years of trying to build through free agency is what has necessitated the current stripping down of the roster getting anything of value for players who still have some if they aren’t a part of the vision of managements roster in a few years.
