I have to admit, initially, I was against the idea of drafting Teddy Ginn Jr.. Mostly because I felt he was a high risk boom or bust type player (which he still may be) and that we had other needs that were higher. But after looking at our draft I'm happy we have this guy, and still filled some key need positions.
1. QB. We have our QB of the future. The more I see and learn about John Beck, the more confident I am that this is the guy. I don't mind that he's a few years older than Brady Quinn, the extra seasoning is a bonus I think. Quinn has an awful lot of hype that he has to live up to, but in truth Beck looks like he has a great arm, is more accurate, reads defenses well, is a high character guy and is very mobile. Sounds good to me, we addressed our greatest need and it will be interesting to compare Quinn and Beck's career. I think Beck will be just fine, and his age doesn't preclude him from being our QB for the next 8-10 years assuming he's as good as we think he is and stays healthy, so what more can you ask for?
2. Left Tackle. This was a great need going into the draft because we let D mac go and we didn't really have much success with others we tried at that position last year. I guess the plan here is to move Vernon Carey to Left Tackle, and move Anthony Alabi to Right Tackle with Joe Toledo (and LJ shelton in a pinch) to provide depth. This seems like a reasonable solution to me.
3. Interior offensive line. Well, I'm pretty excited about the Samson Satele pick. He's powerful and hopefully will beat out Hadnot at our center position so we can move Rex to Left Guard. We go another guy in Round six who is versitle enough to play both center and guard, don't know much about him, but if he makes the team, then we should have some decent depth and versatility on our O-line.
4. Running Back. With the departures of Sammy Morris and Travis Minor and the fact that Ricky Williams still hasn't been reinstated (although I believe he will be) it was actually a priority to address this position. We added a quick shifty guy who should also be able to help us on special teams. Another weapon, and more speed. Not a bad pick, and still addressing the side of the ball that needs it the most.
5. We picked up a young mauling Samoan fullback. Sounds great! We all know how important Lorenzo Neal is to San Diego's offense. The addition of Corey Schlesinger in the offseason with the addition of Mauia should give us some powerful guys who can open holes for Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, and Lorenzo booker. Sound good to me.
6. Tedd Ginn Jr. Well, when you consider that we addressed all of the above needs, Tedd Ginn Jr. almost seems like icing on the cake. He needs to get healthy, but to have an explosive punt/kick returner who we can also line up out of the backfield etc. to help bring some more speed to the receiver corps sounds good to me. Many of us may have preferred others at this pick, but that's irrelevant now. Ginn is ours, and he has alot of potential to be an electrifying player for us, so I'm sure rooting for him.
7. Later round picks. Don't know. That Nose tackle looks promising, the other guys, if any of them make the team, that will be a bonus.
8. Our secondary. With Jason Allen moving to Corner, if he can make that adjustment (he has the athletic ability) then I think our secondary will be fine. This was a fairly week class for cornerbacks. Not bad for safties, but weak for corners, so if you didn't draft a cornerback like in the first couple of rounds of this draft, you weren't likely to get a good one. So, I think we'll be fine in combination with porter and taylor coming off the edges. New England is scary, but they still have to stop our pass rush.
9. Our D-line is old. Rubbish, it's not only fine with lots of young depth behind it, but it is in fact the strength of this team.
All in all, I'd say we are a better football team after this draft, and we have addressed most of our needs on the side that needed it the most, i.e. the offensive side.
All things being equal, I am actually happier that we selected John Beck over Brady Quinn, I think we've finally got ourselves a quarterback...
