"Several sources" tell the Palm Beach Post the Dolphins are expected to switch to a 4-3 defense in 2012, and that as a result free agent NT Paul Soliai will be allowed to walk.

New coach Joe Philbin has yet to even hire a defensive coordinator, but this could be a sign he's not planning to lure an assistant from his former Green Bay. The Packers have run a 3-4 since hiring DC Dom Capers in 2009. Soliai had a disappointing season playing under the franchise tag in 2011, grading out as Pro Football Focus' 38th best defensive tackle.

Soliai was a beast. I dont see how he was dissapointing at all. But I see why they would let him walk.
 
I really dislike the idea of switching to a 4-3. Our personnel is really geared for the 3-4.
 
He played better in the last year of his contract than he did under the franchise tag. I hope he signs a huge contract so we can get a good compensatory pick out of it.
 
I call BS on the ranking, your not the 3rd ranked run defense with bad NT play. And NT is not expected to have a great impact in the pass rush, just get some push up the middle which doesn't show up on the stat sheet.
 
Solia probably wants to get top 5 money and thats no where near what he deserves so they need to let him walk and not over pay him. We got lots of Talented Defensive Tackles!!
 
3-4 or 4-3... It really doesnt make a bit of difference if you have a creative play caller..
 
Classic Dolphins Thinking! Develop a player for 4-5 years... then when he finally plays up to his potential, let him walk. I like it!
 
Athletic, above-average bulks like him clogging up the middle do not grow on trees.
 
Speculation. We dont know what defense we are going to run, and even if we switch to a 4-3, Soliai can still play in a 4-3. Starks was dangled as trade bait last year, Merling is on his way out, and Langford is a FA. We have no idea what will happen really. Any one of those linemen may be gone.

P.S - Soliai was not a "beast" this year. He played well the 2nd half of 2010, and thats pretty much it. He's not worth a big contract.
 
Its all nonsense until a Defensive Coordinator is officially dotting the i's and crossing the t's on his contract. If you don't know what defense you are running yet, you can't have any real sense of what we will do with him.

Sources. Sources. Sources..... dont know anything until its official. then we'll see what we do with him.
 
Things change. If they continue scouting and don't see the players to draft to fill those holes, they will be forced to stick with a 3-4 for now. If that happens, all of a sudden Soliai is no longer walking...
