A look at the NFL Players Association website Tuesday offers a glimpse as to why the Miami Dolphins are officially bargain hunting in free agency now.

The Dolphins have 61 players under contract and have $9,166,140 salary cap space to deal with today. Only seven other teams have less cap space than the Dolphins, none of them in the AFC East.

And Miami’s figure is actually an overstatement because 61 players under contract don’t include Williams Hayes, who has agreed to but has not officially signed a one-year contract, which is expected to be around $1.75 million to $2.5 million — all of which would subtract from the Dolphins’ cap space because he would be included in the team’s top 51 contracts.

Although the Dolphins have to restrain themselves from paying Saks Fifth Avenue prices for the remaining free agents they might be interested in, there’s good news:

The remaining available free agents the team currently has in its sights are Walmart caliber and thus not all that expensive.

Secondly, the Dolphins will get a $17 million cap credit after June 1 when the fiscal benefit from cutting Pro Bowl defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh kicks in. The Dolphins will use that space to sign their draft class prior to July training camp, budget for their practice squad and stash some away for emergencies and possible carryover into 2019.

Could be better but was far worse prior to FA. Time to keep the cap manageable.

Nice. Only thing I don’t get is, if they hated the old deals and had to dump them because of mishandling of the salary cap, then why in all this house cleaning is the guy that made those bad deals not gone or at least on the hot seat?

I'm surprised at the expected Hayes contract number since the previous year the Dolphins and Hayes agreed to terminate the 2018 year that would've paid him $5M.

So far, they are showing a lot more discipline in free agency. Hopefully they keep a cushion so they can potentially pick up a camp cut or carryover enough to next season to put them in better position going forward.

Maybe it has something to do with the injury- not sure how concrete a number that is either- Armando may be speculating on that one a little.

Maybe he is on the hot seat.........................we can only hope.

Only the top 51 player salaries for a team count against the salary cap in the offseason. (Outstanding tenders apply.) During the season, all player salaries count toward the salary cap.

That's not a lot of money. We might be done for now in free agency which is fine with me

Ozzy rules!!

Yeah not too much out there really. We could bring back Sam Young and maybe add a DT and i would call it quits there

Maybe a vet RB after summer cuts, for now look to day 3 if the draft ,maybe even round 3. For TE, it HAS to be the pick in round 2. None of these vets will do much for us- roll with derby gray and a rookie
