NYC bans aluminum bats in High School baseball

NEW YORK (AP)  The New York City Council voted Wednesday to ban metal bats from high school baseball in the nation's largest school system, a change that supporters say will make the game slower and safer.
The measure was not certain to become law, though, because Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he was not sure whether he would veto or sign it.
The bill's sponsors say that non-wood bats make faster and harder hits and that this can be dangerous for young players in the path of the balls.

In 2005, an American Legion Baseball study found no substantial scientific proof to support the argument that wooden bats are safer than metal bats.

I'm sorry, but only someone who hasn't played baseball can come to that conclusion. I see Mussina agrees with the studies, but I guarantee 99.9% of pro ball players, who've also played in college, would laugh at that study.

I'm all for it.

And I personally think every college should switch to wooden bats too that way scouts and fairly judge kids talent as it's much much different swinging a metal bat as opposed to a wooden one.

no lie. when i read what you bolded, i was in disbelief.

agreed. i think they need to change college first, then high school.

Didn't college mandate changes to their aluminum bats in order to make them more wood-like in performance? I know I heard about that proposal, maybe it never went through?

This is a dumb idea. Metal bats are hardly killing kids in HS, kids will have a tough time adjusting. Hitting with a wooden bat is much different, and much tougher. The worst part is these kids will have to go back to metal bats in college. How dumb is that.

Nope it didn't go through. Only a few non-division 1 schools changed. I don't think any D1 schools use wood.

I didn't mean change to wood. I meant changing how the aluminum bats perform.... tweaking them to have less "pop"

A ball off of a wooden bat goes almost as fast as a ball coming off of a metal bat.

What's going to happen when the first shattered bat impales someone?

Has a shattered bat ever impaled ANYONE at ANY level.

Besides it's impossible based on what I saw on mythbusters. A cannonball going through wood can't make the wood impale someone, I doubt a baseball can.

Tell that to Rick Helling...

I know it's not likely to happen all the time, I was just saying it will eventually happen somewhere.

I don't see the big deal. I hardly think there's a big difference in metal and wood bats as far as swinging goes. My brother plays in wooden bat tournaments all the time and he, nor anyone else, has to make a big adjustment. And these are 11 year old travel ball kids. Not high school players.

Stupid reason to change IMO. If a player takes a broken bat to the face whats next styrofoam? I don't think its a big deal but I think the reason for the change is fairly idiotic.

whewwwww, thank goodness for this.

so the kid survives the gang ridden NYC schools all day, then the ride home on a bus with no seat belts, but it's the aluminum baseball bat he uses that parents should be concerned with?

i dare say more kids are injured by thrown baseballs than those hit by aluminum bats.

Bad decision. As someone who played with an aluminum bat in high school and in community college (I played my first year) right here in the state of NY, I think this is bull****. If kids were getting hit with line drives every game and this was a thing that occurred all the time, I could see the rule change but it doesn't happen enough for me to agree with this. As far as scouts judging talent, you know when a kid's got it and when he doesn't. It doesn't matter if it's an aluminum bat or a wooden bat, if a kid has the skills, he's going to hit with both!
