Chad never has time to complete a third down because he always is being pressured .When Chad is rushed or pressured he makes mistakes and rushes his throw. Why, because the offensive line has been horrible on third down. Chad is always forced to throw underneath or just not do what he does because the line folds on third downs. I think this is a huge problem. You watch the game tapes and tell me that the O-line is solid on third down and giving Chad enough time. Just a critical observation. Go Fins, always.

He had trouble throwing on 3rd down in the Seattle game because they were throwing numerous blitz packages at him. Correct play calling and execution can slow a blitz down.

Look at all the games and you will see the same problem.

yeah i think we are 2 and 36 against 3rd and 7 or more. The flipside to the arguement though is that if our line would get more push on first and second we wouldnt be in third and long.

I wasn't surprised that chad had no time passing on 3rd downs today because they sent most of there blitzes right were the RG plays and we just couldn't pick them up.

It is fortunately not only us who have this problem. Most teams have problems at 3 down, from what I can see. Generally, I've been pleased with our line this year and think they are doing a fantastic job to give Chad Pennington more time to throw the ball.
He has even been extremely good to find the right open receiver under pressure. It always helps, and makes the line to see a little better off.

The match against Seahawks is always difficult to play from the offensive side of the ball. Their defense has plenty of speed, and logical enough they put more blitz packs up against us. It could also be seen in the game at times. They just understand to exploit their defense strength against us.

Had we been more successful in the first two downs, then we could avoid to have these third and long situations.

Our right guard was on the practice squad last Tuesday, and Seattle just abused him all day. Carey has been very inconsistent, nowhere near as good as I expected him to be. I think he got rolled up on early in the season, and hasn't really been the same since.

RG is obviously a problem we are still trying to solve. They have high hopes for McChesney, and I think they'd like to see him on the right and a healthy Smiley on the left. The key question being can Smiley stay healthy, or is his shoulder going to continue to be a problem?

The reason is that other teams blitz us relentlessly on 3rd down because they know our receivers can't get quick separation and that Pennington does not have enough arm to burn them with a big play.

Right - like he could never make a 55 yard throw to the back of the end zone into double coverage and put it right over Ginn's shoulder in a spot where only he could catch it, for example. Pennington's arm is just pathetic.

one step at a time. we have a smart QB for a change, doesn't have the strongest arm, but very smart. when was the last time the fins had three wins in a row, i'tll come around, its getting better. this is the first time they've been over .500 in three years.

After we were up 14 nothing in the Seattle game they figured out that blitzing was screwing up our timing. It seemed like they blitzed on every play after that and nothing was working for us on offense

Yes, Penny can lob a ball as far as anybody starting in the NFL. When it comes time to zip the ball in there on a mid range pass it does not get there in time. Penny's head is what is winning games for now, but anybody who doesn't recognise that the lack of arm strength is a major factor in our 3rd and 7 or more stats has his head in the sand, Rook. The fact that defenses don't have to defend the whole field is major. Burn them deep a couple times and all that blitz B.S. will stop.

For the most part I agree with you. I dont think it is much as his arm strength being his weakness but his lack of being able to pick up who the blitzer is and who is going to be the open man. I think henning bears responsibility on this as well, he is'nt calling the right plays to get chad enough targets in that 6-7 yrd range

True. But it seems like he's working on that with his new mechanics. He's been overthrowing a lot lately on short and medium passes.

Think about it! When its third and long, obviously defenses are gunna be blitzing a few people at you or at least one. Also when its third and long we cant keep any TEs in blocking or RBs, etc bc we need lots of yards. Thus when someone blitzes is much less likely there is someone there to pick it up
