I've included a link to the statistics of each linemen which has the penalties they committed, and the sacks allowed by them. Also next to their name is my own personal rating of each linemen out of 5 stars.

Who've we signed:

LG Jeno James (****1/2)

2003: 16 games started, 3.5 sacks allowed

Guys we're looking at:

OT Damion McIntosh (***)

2003: 13 games started, 6 sacks allowed

OT Orlando Brown (**1/2)
http://snap.stats.com/stats/nflinfo/playerstats.asp?id=3018&Submit=Go
16 games, 13 games started, 8.5 sacks allowed

OT Ephraim Salaam (***1/2)
http://snap.stats.com/stats/nflinfo/playerstats.asp?id=4428&Submit=Go
14 games started, 4.5 sacks allowed

OT Adam Meadows (****)
http://snap.stats.com/stats/nflinfo/playerstats.asp?id=3923
12 games, 5 games started, 1.5 sacks allowed

OG Cosey Coleman (****)

16 games started, 2.5 sacks allowed

only problem with this is, it doesn't show the extras, like how much assistance was rolled to the guy, or if they were coverage sacks or legitimate pressure.

good stuff.

How about Penalties? Orlando Brown singlehandedly lost the Ravens a few games last year because of stupid holding and personal foul penalties...

Nice work and thanks for the stats, gonk.

I think your ratings need some work, though. Meadows is good enough to start for us, but the fact that he couldn't find a starting spot on the Colts line, despite his versatility, tells me he's far less than a 4-star talent.

And Surferosa, I'm with you on Brown. He played a huge role in losing that playoff game for the Ravens.

Don't forget about age though.........
Brown is like 33 or something, and quite honestly, I dislike signing people that old =(

Brown had somethin like 10 penalties and McIntosh had 9. Kelvin Garmon had like 14 penalties which kinda turns me off him a bit. Coleman does well not getting penalties.

Most of Brown's and McIntosh's penalties are false starts.

Thanks for the good stat work. On what did you base your ratings?

I have some disagreement there and I think these stats don't tell the real picture.

McIntosh played LT while Brown played RT, for example. LT is much more prone to give up sacks than RT.

Second, this doesn't factor in run blocking, which is a critical issue - even bigger than sacks allowed given that we are looking for a RT who can open holes for Ricky. McIntosh is head and shoulders above these other guys as a run blocker - on the scouting services I've read.

Third, is the factor of size and style of play. Meadows and Salaam are smaller guys. They tend to fit better in "finesse" style lines. Much of Salaam's success comes from playing in Denver's chop block, west-coast offense style. That's a style in which quickness and agility are much bigger factors than a "smashmouth" OL.

McIntosh, on the other hand, is a behemoth (so is Brown) wide-body, who is noted for being a solid run blocker.

This has been part of the problem with our whole OL philosophy for the past 3-4 years. We have too much mix and match. Either go with the Denver/SF style with all your guys a bit smaller but quick and use a cut-block system, or go with the old Dallas/Washington/NY Giants smashmouth system - all the guys but the center are good size and able to physically dominate opposing DL's.

I perfer the latter for what we have with Ricky and with the offense we are running. It will be interesting to see what happens here. But, we need to get some OL's in here! At least a RT (b/c we already have two rookie OG's who have potential - Bates and Whitley).

If Greg Jerman is starting at RT for us - we are in HUGE trouble. Yes, I know I'm going out on a limb on that one ... ;)

Nice stuff. Other than the fact if the guy can or can not play, the biggest thing to me are the penalties. Otherwise, alot of everything can be attributed to others around him in that the best possible line, well the whole team actually, is the right combination of players and not the "best" players. Look at nE and you see what I mean. They have the right combo right thru their depth charts. Woody went down b4 the playoffs or during it, "scrub" comes in and don't miss a lick.
