I am extremely proud of this Miami Dolphins team! They went into one of the NFL’s toughest atmospheres (MetLife housed 76,957 screaming fans) and dominated their division rival New York Jets 23-3. The Jets boasted one of the NFL’s best rushing attacks and one of the NFL’s best run-stopping defenses. However, that did not stop Miami as they totaled 453 net yards (125 rushing, 328 passing) and put up 23 points. I would like to say that this gigantic offensive performance was not a result of New York’s mediocrity, but it was. I wish it was due to Mike Sherman’s fantastic play calling, but it was not. Even though Miami dominated the entirety of the game, they only led 6-0 at halftime. Who do we have to thank for the lack of points? That’s right, Offensive Coordinator Mike Sherman.

Sherman is always bad, but lets not forget Tannehill left several throws on the field in that first half that could of made this a different score as well.

Just not a good half of football points wise for an offense that dominated TOP and Field position

He needs to go. It has been pointed out that his play calling and formations he employs, especially in short yardage situations, are inexplicable.

I believe in Philbin and I see Tannehill slowly developing into a QB with unlimited potential. I just pray that Philbin is retained should a new GM be brought in. If the story about him wanting to cut Incognito last year is true, then Philbin deserves MORE power with respect to personnel decisions. I trust that he knows what type of players fit his system.

But he has got to make the tough decision to sever ties with the key members of his staff with whom he has had a prior relationship that have hindered this team's success.

If he does so, then Philbin, Tannehill, a new OC and a revamped OL could be a recipe for success in the years to come.

your offensive gameplan was brilliant against us, the execution was not or we may have lost 50-3 but the gameplan itself you cannot be mad at.

I tend to blame the first half more on Tannehill than on Sherman.

Well when you have two inconsistent offensive generals, there's plenty of blame to go around.

then again, our OL/RB tandem and Sturgis left at least 10 pts on the field in that first half

As has been pointed out, the empty-set backfield with the fade pass to Clay on 4th and goal is inexcusable. I can't think of a lower percentage call. You have to make the defense defend the run and the pass in that situation. You have a mobile, athletic QB and there is no reason not to allow him a run/pass option. As others have said, why not call a bootleg or a rollout in that situation? Or a QB sneak?
These decisions by Sherman are hindering Tannehilll's ability to succeed and in certain situations will be the difference between winning and losing.

ye it was wide open and w/ a decent pass it is a TD.

The overall gameplan was pretty good, no question about that. I just hate our redzone playcalling. Even though we don't have a short yardage run game, we just love to dink and dunk to the 2 yard line and try to punch it in from there. We rarely take shots into the endzone on first or second down from around the 20, even though our personnel don't suit the more compressed field the further forward you bring the ball towards the goalline. It's like Sherman out-thinks himself sometimes.

Having watched it again, there were a couple of poor throws from Tanny in the first half, but we were undone more by playcalling than by Tanny's execution. We're definitely suffering by not having Binns, Keller and especially Gibson on the field. Clay is a beast, but we need more receiver variety out there. Notwithstanding that, Not that it'd happen, but I'd love to see Sherman delegate playcalling to Philbin as soon as the ball reaches the opponents 25 (or preferably, fire him).

Tannehill continues to improve. Despite the horrible fade pass to Clay and him missing Moore and Hartline down the perimeter, he is slowly beginning to hit receivers in stride, with better anticipation. There was a bad miscommunication with Hartline on a crossing route in the 1st quarter, where Hartline finished the route but Tannehill expected him to sit. They sorted it out and Tanny led him to two great throws on similar crossing routes, one of which was the TD.

One of the many things I hate about the WCO is that it retards the development of the instinctual side of a QBs game. It's so predicated on route running, dropbacks and timing - which are obviously the main things worked on in training. Then, when he has to quickly read the field and make a gut call outside of the predetermined progressions, the QB has a smaller bank of reps to draw from. The fact Tanny is a relatively inexperienced QB in the first place (and had to run the same systems under Sherman in TAMU) exacerbates that.

Because he just keeps improving in small and not-so-small ways, I believe he'll develop further. But if we didn't have Sherman in there, he'd be now moving ahead faster.

It seems very small because he actually regressed after the first 3 games, in a large part due to the constant pressure he was up against. You saw things from Tannehill in that 2nd half that you haven't seen in 2 months. Anticipation, ball placement and reading through his progressions were things we saw early and it almost turned into "I don't wanna get hit or fumble" so lemme get rid of this thing for the course of a month and change, and now slowly you started to see some of the old Tannehill in that 2nd half. Hopefully his best football of the season is ahead of him now that he has built up some confidence with the group of guys in front of him.

You can't expect your 2nd year QB to constantly make 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 conversion passes. Most teams in the NFL don't have to rely on their QB to make those because they have a game plan in place to efficiently convert them.

I'm going to echo some of the previous posters. The game plan was excellent, but some of the individual play calls were terrible. The 4th and 1 call was the worst. That's a relatively low-percentage pass. If that's your best play in that situation, tell Joe to kick the field goal, and if that's your best play in that situation, why are you calling plays in the NFL?

But in all honesty, I could live with the occasional blunder on a specific play if it means he calls a more balanced game - like he did against the Jets. I also liked the use of the screen to Miller.
