Alot has been put on the Tannehill draft pick but if that pair of DE's flop for Ireland the way Langford and Merling flopped for Parcells, than you got to think the Phins wont be good this year. I'm guess they'll be starting Right and Left DE's in the 4-3 and they will be the anchors of keeping the run contained as well as putting pressure on Brady and Sanchez. Tony McDaniel will sub in but if Odrick and Oliver prove to be as stout as Starks and Solia than we'll have pretty tough front 4.
 
Langford did not flop. Langford was a great pick and earned his contract with the Rams. Miami had to decide between Langford and Soliai in my opinion, made the right choice.
 
whats the odds oliver is a better player than Coples. that guy has bust written all over him and seeing the Jets draft him was that much sweeter.
 
To say Langford is a flop is pretty irresponsible first of all. The guy is a pretty good DE, HARDLY a flop.

Wake IS one of our starting DEs, so Oliver will split time with someone on the other side (likely Odrick). Odrick will play both DE and DT with his versatility so he will not be a DE exclusivley. Starks will terrorize teams at DT in a 4-3. Solia will be our Vince Wilfork in a 4-3 which should also be a nightmare for teams.

Starting D-Line is going to be Wake, Solia, Starks, and Odrick (not Oliver). Oliver just needs to post some sacks on obvious passing downs to take some pressure off of Wake.

Oliver and Odrick sure do matter but they are not the two players most crucial to the Phins Success. Our D-line has been top 5 the last few years and where has that gotten us?


Hopefully one day all the people here in finheaven will realize the QB position has become THE most important position in the NFL, therefore making Tannehill the SINGLE MOST important draft pick for the Dolphins success.
 
7.5 career sacks makes him a borderline flop. This team should be loaded at DE right now, but they have to keep wasting draft picks on them. Same thing for the secondary. We've devoted the past 5 years drafts to the D and still have a pretty shakey one.

Edit:

Wake is undersized to play as a 3 down lineman in the 4-3 scheme. I see him playing more in the OLB spot in the 3-4 as he has been.

In a 3-4 d-linemen are not supposed to be the ones getting sacks, linebackers are. The D-line's job is to stop the run and keep the linebackers clean to make plays. Langford was great against the run and a solid rusher, you can't ask anything else from him.
 
Langford was in NO WAY a BUST!!! He might not have gotten many sacks, but the man played the run with the best in the NFL and was a vital cog in Miami's run defense over his career in a Dolphins uniform!!! As far as Vernon and Odrick, the jury is out. For Ireland's sake, I hope Odrick continues his refining his skills and potential into a more well rounded DE/DT. It was a pleasant surprise seeing Odrick play the way he did in 2011. I have stated before in other threads; Odrick could turn out to be what Richard Seymour was to NE and is to Oakland. Odrick has brute strength much like Langford had. Vernon oozes pass rush potential. IF he can turn that into making plays on Sunday's Vernon could be just what the doctor ordered for Miami. I have come to trust Ireland's eye for talent along the Defensive and Offensive lines. Let's just hope he's hit another Home Run with Vernon.
 
I'm curious as to where Odrick will play. Everyone here seems to say starting LE...is there any source or indication that this will be the case? If I had to guess, he's rotating in with Starks again as a back-up DT. At 6'5" 305 lbs, I don't see him as a LE in the 4-3...

I don't think you're going to be thinking it was "sweet" when we have to play him.
 
I'll say this to the notion that the Dolphins need Olivier Vernon to be great in order to have a successful defense...need to do some historical research.

The Dolphins had a pretty good defense in 2008 that allowed 19.8 points per game and got them to the playoffs. The only pass rusher worth noting on the team was Joey Porter. Matt Roth certainly wasn't a guy that could put his hand down and rush reliably on passing downs. The only defensive lineman that could make any headway against the passer was Randy Starks. But Joey Porter was the guy.

Then in 2010, we again had a pretty good defense that allowed 20.8 points per game, and the only pass rusher was Cameron Wake. Koa Misi was a rookie that year and he was no better at rushing the passer than he is right now. Randy Starks was again our best pass rushing defensive lineman.

Now in 2011, we had a pretty good defense that allowed 19.6 points per game. Again, Cameron Wake the main pass rusher. I guess some would try and say yeah but we had Jason Taylor opposite him. But in reality, Taylor was no better from a pass rush standpoint in 2011 than Koa Misi was in 2010 or Matt Roth in 2008, the two guys that were functioning as pass rushers opposite Wake. Taylor rushed the passer 345 times and produced 7 sacks, 12 hits and 16 pressures. Misi in 2010 rushed 254 times and produced 5 sacks, 7 hits and 20 pressures. Roth rushed 205 times and produced 5 sacks, 4 hits and 18 pressures. Misi and Roth averaged a play on the quarterback every 7.8 rush snaps, where Taylor averaged one every 9.9 rush snaps.

In actuality, Miami does not NEED a second pass rusher in order to be a top 10 defense. They have enough on roster between Koa Misi, Jamaal Westerman and Olivier Vernon to accomplish what they need. I think if they want to be a top 3 defense they'll need Vernon to step up and be a great pass rusher in his own right...but they don't need that to be a top 5 to 10 defense.
 
With Vernon and Wake on the outside, and Odrick and Starks inside, our nickle/ 3rd down pass rush is going to generate some nice pressure.
 
What we need is to have the refs call holding on the best def end in the business (Wake). I watched many times where an opponents drive was allowed to proceed because of a non holding call on this guy. I'm glad we got these other guys on our team but I just can't explain why we never even got the obvious calls.

Odrick has already PROVEN that he's not a flop. The Langford remark has already been shot down. Do you even watch the games?
