I posted something similar in another thread. I would like to hear other's thoughts on my take on the disparity in offensive production by half.

I am not a stat guy per se, so I am going off my eyes on this:
IMO it I no coincidence our offense struggles in the first half and pick up in the 2nd half.

The first half is a scripted gameplan for the most part. Tanne struggles to go through progressions and has a tendency to lock on his first option. When that option is not open he tends to hold the ball or force it. There are countless examples of this, see both picks last week, the 3rd down to simms he overthrew etc. It is hard to be successful with only one option post snap in the passing game.

IMO Lazor does a great job making adjustments and knowing his QB. IMO RT can make some very good throws when he knows where he is going pre snap and can step into throws, especially interdiate throws like comebacks, skinny posts, deep outs etc.
I believe Lazor has halftime to see what the defense is doing and put Tanne in situations where his first read is more likely to be open. He can find mismatches in personell and coverage to help Tanne pre determine throws. Tanne has shown his accuracy improves once he gets going and the mental aspect is simplified.
This means Lazor needs to adjust sooner or the qb will have to be better/ quicker with progressions in the first half. Time to grow and be an NFL QB who does not have to pre determine every throw.

What say u FH brethren?
Any other theories on the disparity between halves?

I think Lazor is going through growing pains. Our ability to pick it up in the second half shows his potential to be a great coach as he is able to make the proper adjustments to get the team going - this is a sign of a GOOD COACH with a SMART MIND.

However his inability to get us going early in games and questionable decisions (just this week:not being able to punch it in with all the runs straight down the middle in first half and the immortal final drive), show that he is not quite there yet.

Hopefully Lazor continues to grow in the role, we unfortunately cannot afford for him to have too many more growing pains this season if we want to make a run at the playoffs. We need to be more consistent across the board from our coaches. There is enough talent in enough places that we should be a playoff team with even above average coaching. Time for the staff to step up. Lead your team, lets go.

I just think RT17 comes out cold. I liken it to my golf game. When I play 18 holes it takes me about 3-4 holes to get good and warmed up. Holes 5-14 I usually kick ass and have my best 9 holes. Then I tend to fade at the end.

This is exactly what has happened to Ryan for the last 3 years. His second and 3rd quarters are his best.

Not sure it is the plays being called because of the following. The opening drive of the game and the second half drive opening drive were essentially the same play calls.
Short pass on 1st down to gain confidence (success). Zone read with RT17 keeping it on the second play. In the 1st half he slid for 4 yards. Second half and he scampers for 40 yards.
The after that in the 1st half he throws 2 in-completions to stall the drive. On the second half opening drive instead of going 1 for 3, RT17 goes 3 for 3 and we score a TD.

I agree with this 100% and it's a big reason why I'm not throwing in the towel on the season. Lazor still draws up some plays that are questionable, and calls them in crucial situations. For instance, if anyone has the All-22 package on NFL.com, go look at that last pass play we called on 2nd down before punting it away to end the game. There are three receivers bunched up in a cluster of about 4 yards of each other in the middle of the field. This is a recurring problem we've had and IMO it is simply bad play design. That doesn't mean Lazor is a bad OC (in fact, I really like him), but I think it's just a function of inexperience. Better spacing on pass routes can open things up.

I actually think the reason we struggle so badly early on is because we dont use our scripted plays in the first half. I belive we use our scripted plays in the second half. Just a theory.

I have only seen 2 good halves of football from our offense so it's difficult to pinpoint a pattern of success or to say Lazor and Tanny make major adjustments at halftime because they have only done so 2 out of 5 games.

One thing I would like to see us do is take the ball on offense in the 1st quarter when we win the toss. I know it a fundamental thing with Philbin to defer when we win the toss.
But it IS NOT working. We have been outscored 30-13 in the 1st period.

Why not change it up and give the offense a chance to start the game and give us a chance to play from a lead?

Personally I like getting the ball in 2nd half.
Our offense is better in 2nd half

I HATE when opposition scores before half and then gets it back.
I can't bang on Philbin for this, I prefer to defer. nothing scientific, just my preference.
It would be great to get a stop in the first drive though that's for sure.

yeah, it is NOT the cause of our problems in the 1st. Even though we kicked off 4 of 5 games we only have one less possession in the 1st period. 14-13
It is mostly execution and being ready to start the game IMO

Just thinking that a more aggressive approach may shake things up and improve our starts.

I think it's a mixture of things. Some on Tanny, some on Lazor, some on other personnel. Not making excuses as I do think we have talent, and Ryan Tannnehill does have inconsistent accuracy, but outside of Landry, we don't have guys who will make the tough adjustment catches consistently, and there are a lot of calls in Lazor's offense that are back shoulder throws and fades (at least based on what I've seen so far, and based off of what I see in Philly). He calls a lot of those plays in the redzone and they've worked twice on my count (Wallace against Buffalo, Landry last week). Is that on Tanny or players? Honestly a bit of both. Tanny's back corner fades aren't good, but there have been a few throws that have been dropped that should have been caught.

Again I'm not trying to make this an anti or pro Ryan Tannehill post. I just don't think the answer is as simple dumbing the offense down for QB. I think we tend to pick the pace up more in the second (mainly cause we're usually down), and I think we go away from long developing plays.

Tannehill is the problem period! When Lazor worked with a genuine QB (Foles) this was not an issue.

This same pattern occurred in many games last season. It isn't related to Lazor.

Bill Lazor wasn't the offensive coordinator in Philadelphia. Chip Kelly designed the offense and Chip Kelly calls the plays. Bill Lazor was the quarterbacks coach.

Tannehill was a desperation measure by Ireland and should not have been drafted period!

I am aware that Lazor was the QB coach at Philly. I bet he wishes that he actually had a QB to run his offense. Not some over-drafted receiver turned QB.

POINTS PER GAME
In 2012 we scored 8.8 in the 1st half and 9.2 in the 2nd half (18.0 total).
In 2013 we scored 10.0 in the 1st half and 9.7 in the 2nd half (19.7 total).
In 2014 we score 8.0 in the 1st half and 16.0 in the 2nd half (24.0 total).

LEAGUE RANKINGS POINTS PER GAME
In 2012 we rank 23 for the 1st half, 29 for the 2nd half.
In 2013 we rank 26 for the 1st half, 24 for the 2nd half.
In 2014 we rank 30 for the 1st half, 1 for the 2nd half.

The only patterns I see is that we have improved the point total every year since 2012 and we have to wait and see if the 8.0 and 16.0 in 2014 games is because of a small sample size. That #1 in the 2nd half of 2014 games stands out though.
