I personally think this is all because of Lazor/Hickey and Philbin has little to do with the improvement on this team.

We scored 16 points last night. That "improvement" is on all the players and all the coaches.

If Philbin didn't get along with Hickey he wouldn't be here, if Philbin didn't hire Lazor, he wouldn't be here.

Marino.

Usually i think outside influences and "mentors" are overrated. But Tannehill has looked like a different quarterback the last 7 or 8 games and it was around that time that we started getting reports that Marino had begun watching film with him and Matt Moore. Our quarterbacks improvement has gone beyond the X's and O's, Tannehill has been far more confident of late than in the past. Marino is pretty much openly campaigning for a front office role and his confidence in Tannehill seems to have given our qb a level of comfort and security he seemed to lack the first few weeks of the season. Learning the tricks of the trade from the best in history certainly hasnt hurt either.

John Benton also deserves some praise. Hes taken a talent deficient line, one with injuries no less, and transformed them into a mostly efficient unit. I dont think its a giant coincidence that our run game and protection increased dramatically at the same time despite playing different players at various times of the season. I hope Gary Kubiak doesnt get another head coaching job, as it wouldnt be a stretch to see him looking at Benton as OC.

I think a big part of it is Lazor the QB coach and Benton the OL coach. However, and this is kind of a weird distinction: I think that one of our problems last night was Lazor the offensive coordinator. I didn't like how he called the game at all.

I wonder how much of that is Joe Philbin? When Sherman first got here, what we heard was that Sherman wanted to run the ball and Philbin saw no point to it -- he just wanted to pass, pass, pass. Now Lazor gets here, and he has a history of being with coaches who like to run the ball -- and he himself loved to run it at UVa -- and now suddenly we're throwing 21 passes to 3 runs in the 1st half?

Curious.

So you blame Philbin if the team doesn't play well or do well but he gets no credit whatsoever if the team improves?

You can't have it both ways.

With all due respect to the OP, I think the poll is flawed unless this is a New Orleans/ Sean Payton situation. In most cases I would hope that the OC and the front office would have to get more credit/blame for the talent and the performance of the team's offense than the HC because the OC is more directly involved and the talent is so important. Who would vote for the HC in this poll except in the rare cases like New Orleans?

So you are suggesting that the 21 passes and 3 runs were because Philbin took over play calling because of a a rumor you heard 2 years ago? That's quite a stretch. Nothing curious about it. Lazor called the plays.

Maybe it had something to do with the Jets having a great run defense and had two CB starting who are undrafted free agents?

I could see this breakout coming from a mile away. I've been predicting it since long before Sherman got fired. The reason being is we built this team very unconventionally for a rookie QB. Most teams try to bring him along slowly expanding his role in the offense as he gains experience. What we did was build a team fit for Aaron Rodgers or Peyton Manning and threw the young QB into the deep end. Sink or swim style. Well, its looking like Tannehill just may be a swimmer.

Secondly, there has been a clear philosophical shift since Philbin arrived. We're sinking most of our resources into passing the ball on offense and stopping the pass on defense. If you can get him players that excel at stopping the pass and the run I'm sure he'd take it, but stopping the pass is the priority. I believe that he believes if you simply win the passer rating differential you'll probably win the game. And more often than not that starts and finishes with your own QB.

It also seems like how we build the team is different. Rather than dig a hole to fill a hole we're overloading certain positions, especially skill positions. The thought process here would be having one elite unit of WRs and/or pass rushers is more valuable than having mediocre units across the board.

So in my opinion these philosophies have a lot to do with how our offense has been able to blossom this season. And it still has a lot of room to grow. We've left a lot of points on the field this season. We're not great at hard counting and when we pull one off successfully we don't seem to know how to take advantage, but its coming and seems to be a priority. The deep ball. Tannehill is still too inconsistent and bad for stretches, those stretches are shrinking but still too long. And I believe some sort of uptempo is still in the works. If all, or any of these things takes another big step up next season we could have a very good offense.

There was one or two penalties that took away good gains and put us behind in the down and distance. That took away a lot of our momentum and being behind the chains kind of forces you to pass more. It was very reminiscent of the first half of the Jags game. We'll never force the run. When we become unbalanced like that its a cause and effect thing.

Thumbs down. Horrible poll and question. One does not function at a higher level without the other. It's a synergy of Philbin, Lazor and Benton working together as coaches and combining their knowledge of the game. Also, the idea that we are successful despite our head coach is utterly foolish to say at the least.

Great poll and question. We saw what our offense was last year without Lazor, and we see what it is this year with him. It is silly to think Philbin has anything to do with the improvement.

not saying go on pass and go-go on run i think is good. Solid hard counts as well.

And how do you know Tannehill wouldn't have shown great improvement in his third year with better weapons and a better o-line regardless of who the o-coordinator was?
