Houck will put the 5 best offensive linemen on the field. If this is true then why not have Carey start at RG and have DMAC start at RT. Carey used to play RG in college and he would truly be an upgrade to that spot on our line. I have not studied the offensive line that much during this offseason but it seems that this is our best option. If we do that then our line would look something like this.

LT-Shelton
LG-James
C-Hadnot
RG-Carey
RT-Mcintosh

When he got tried there in 2005 he was less than impressive. Saban briefly moved him there for a while then quickly moved him back and basically said Carey's not going to be moving back there anytime soon.

Also shouldn't be assumed that Damion McIntosh would be a good RT. He's never played there. Brett Tessler, his agent, even told us as much when we asked him in the Ask Brett Tessler forum.

ok thank you. I didnt know that Carey had played any guard for us. I also heard that the player we acquired at guard this offseason was just a mediocre player. What do you think our offensive line will look like.

I don't like Bennie Anderson much either. But Carey was tried at RG in 2004 and briefly in camp in 2005 and it just didn't work out either time. If you think about it, Carey's problem as a pro has been he does not have any fire or energy in run blocking. I think he's more than serviceable as a pass blocker, enough to even hold down the fort at LT in my opinion...but he doesn't move people or grate road as a run blocker...which would make him even less suited for RG than he is RT.

I think it'll be Shelton and James on the left...but from there it's confusing. Nobody said that Hadnot's move to center was going to be a permanent move. They'd like him to play there, but if they run out of viable RG options I don't think they'd hesitate to stick Seth McKinney back in at Center, a position he knows how to play in this OL, and just put Hadnot back at RG.

Furthermore, given my feelings on Bennie Anderson...and the fact that Seth McKinney has NEVER been impressive as a RG when used there in the past (while Ruddy played center)...I'm pretty much figuring that if Joe Toledo doesn't look really good as a rookie, we'll eventually be forced to switch Hadnot back to RG.

but would it really be that much of a conversion to move Carey from RT to RG. I know he did not succeed at the position before but maybe he should be given another chance. Guards are typically less athletic and slower than Tackles. Carey fits both of those characteristics. Either way I am confident that Houck will put the 5 best offensive linemen on the field. He was succesful in doing that last year.

As long as Carey, Hadnot and Shelton are starting in the end, I will be pleased. between Mcintosh, James, Mckinney, Pearson, Bennie Anderson, and Wade smith, there is enough experience there that I will trust whoever the coaching staff picks.

A couple of questions for you CKP. We're hearing about McKinney or Hadnot at center. What about Wade Smith? Is he becoming and afterthought? Also I'm not sure I understood what you meant with regards to Toledo. I had understood that he was (another) TE converted to tackle. Is he being considered a guard?
thanks

your exactly right.. I forgot all about him. I think he was doing good last camp before he got hurt. I am not sure he is starting material though.

Yeah but guards are not typically pedestrian run blockers. You need guards to be maulers, and like I said, Carey just is not one of those.

In college he looked like it, simply because he's very big and very strong. But he faced defenders that weren't as big or strong as they are in the NFL. If I played football against some middle schoolers I'd look like a nasty run blocker too. That doesn't mean I'd have the eye of the tiger at the pro level.

I think we have no stand outs on the line, but a bunch of guys who can play well as a unit. My picks are Shelton, James, Hadnot, Anderson and Carey. I agree w/ CK that Anderson is underwhelming but I think Mularkey will be comfortable w/ him there and Houck likes Maulers. I'd like to see Wade Smith at RG his mobility might be an asset.

Chris, will you be doing any o-line breakdowns like you did last year?

If i remember right it was considered "Houck's" decision on keeping Carney where he is. Something like it "was the wrong psoition for him" if I remeber the Sabanism correctly...

Wade Smith sadly is becoming an afterthought. He's still got a shot at making it, but if he does he will have to do it through Seth McKinney...beat him for a job. There are definitely scenarios in which I could see Wade Smith making the roster. The key is that you need at least two people on the roster that have lots of experience at Center, but probably no more than two given our clear preference for tackles-converted-to-guard. Rex Hadnot was an all american center in college...so that's one. That pits Seth McKinney, Wade Smith, and possibly Alonzo Ephraim in a battle with each other to either be a backup player, or to be a starter at RG. IF Bennie Anderson wins the starting RG position AND Seth McKinney flops at guard, I could see Smith being kept over McKinney on the roster because McKinney only has a one year vet's minimum contract and the coaches probably realize he'll be taking off to another team next year. Smith may have more potential at the Center position.

But again, the cards are not in Wade Smith's favor right now. He's got a shot but he'll have to look really good to take that shot.

Joe Toledo is being worked exclusively at right guard by the coaching staff. Yes he was a TE that converted to both LT and RT...but they're looking at him as a guard for now because he's about 330-340 pounds, very powerful, quick enough to pull...and to be honest, too inexperienced to be tried at tackle right away.

is alonzo ephriam still on this team? He did a decent job when he played for us last year. His main problem is that he commited to many penalties. I was pretty sure though that he was cut this offseason

Most draft reviews I've read have pretty much panned the Toledo pick. But I liked it. He has size and athletic ability, unlike Wade who has abundant athletic ability but lack true LT size. Toledo is a real Houck lineman.
