Injuries cost teams games in the NFL and one of the Miami Dolphins' most underrated and, yes, under-reported injuries of 2015 definitely had that effect.

Offensive right tackle Ja'Wuan James went down on October 29 with a toe injury that was not the big news of the day because in that very game, defensive end Cameron Wake ruptured his Achilles tendon and receiver DeVante Parker aggravated a foot injury on the same foot that had undergone surgery twice, including last summer.

So James kind of fell through the cracks.Well, let me fill in some of the gaps ...

Firstly, the James injury was a dislocated big toe. There had been speculation, including some by me, that it was a turf toe. It was much more serious, obviously. It was so serious that James did not play the rest of the season, missing the final nine games, just as Wake did not.

The injury was a concern for the Dolphins because team doctors couldn't get a real handle on how long it would take to heal. They said it could be as little as four weeks. They said it could be as much as eight weeks. That is a huge gap between best and worst-case scenario. And even then, it took longer than the doctors expected because even as James started walking again and got some practice near the end of the season, he was never quite right.

He was never good enough to get in a game.I'm told he is well now. The injury is fine now.

But the damage was done. Because James could not play, the Dolphins were forced to go with Jason Fox as their right tackle the final nine games. Fox, a good man, was not up to the task. He struggled in pass protection, giving up a handful of sacks. He was cut this offseason. And the Dolphins have worked hard to improve the offensive line depth behind starters like James because the line has been hit hard by injuries in recent years. All you need to know is Mike Pouncey has missed games each of the past two years and left tackle Branden Albert missed much of the 2014 season after suffering a career threatening knee injury.

The Dolphins this offseason signed tackles Sam Young to compete for the No. 3 tackle job Fox held last year. The team added Kraig Urbik for depth at guard and center. And Jermon Bushrod was added to compete at guard and possibly backup at tackle in a pinch.

The Dolphins offensive line depth has gotten better this offseason.

But the team hopes it won't need that depth. And an important part of that hope is having James pick up where he left off his rookie season in 2014 and early in 2015. The team needs James to be the stabilizing force he has been while also improving his base and core strength. That's the goal. A now-healthy James is a good start toward that goal.

As our OL currently stands, if Miami loses a starter again especially a tackle, they're screwed like last season. The new additions have done nothing to make the team better IMO ... and we all know the injuries will come. Let's hope Miami has a relatively healthy season.

Bushrod as a swing Tackle is a massive upgrade over fox....

Though I am still concerned with the LG...

No doubt that injuries will come on the line at some point, will have to see if anyone can fill in better than Fox did last year or not. I saw someplace when Albert, Pouncey and James all play togehter the line has been somewhat effective, part of the problem is they have barely been able to put strings of games togehter were they are all playing together.

Better be, I simply dont trust Albert to play a full healthy season

I think Turner will improve at RG tho

As bad as Dallas Thomas was...adding Fox into that mix was a disaster, you can live with one bad lineman, but once Fox started, you had two BAD lineman and a developmental one.

i cannot believe that Miami has once again put itself in a position where the 3rd tackle is absolutely atrocious...sam young is horrid

it is infuriating that we once again are gonna depend on trash...you don't give a guy $150k guaranteed just to eat it

I'm pretty sure Bushrod is the actual 3rd Tackle...

if that's the case why in the world would you give sam young $150k to sign...that means cause he cant play guard you are just gonna eat it or end up carrying a 4th tackle you don't activate...either option is clown worthy when its this level player

Competition in camp...

I do think the intention is to roll with Bushrod at guard, but if James or Albert go down, you better believe that Bushrod will kick outside and good ol Dallas Thomas or Douglas will be going in at RG.

Overall, not a very good plan, but I can't think of a reason for them not to kick Bushrod outside unless Young is seen as less damning then the other two playing at guard.

you don't pay a guy $150k guaranteed to be competition in camp...I know people think that's peanuts and it is but you don't give away free money like that for guys you have no intentions of being in your plans..if anything that guy should be one of those camp invites not someone you give a red cent to...

he's got to have a roll at this time...if you draft something and cut him you just ate money for no reason...maybe the owner doesn't care about that...I find it hard to believe but I sure as hell would

if he's active on sundays (likely paired with jamil douglas as the pivot and guard active depth) we better hope like hell we don't sustain a tackle injury

So Im assuming Douglas will be the backup center again? And we resigned McClendon again I have no idea why he couldnt get on the field last yest with all the injuries - unless were going to play the game of shuffling him on and off the roster again during the season.

I think it is safe to say we draft a guard in the first 3 rounds of the draft, he starts at LG, Turner at RG.

yes I would assume if douglas doesn't start at left guard he's the backup pivot and guard option active on sundays...McClendon was the only guy that had the strength and anchor to play right guard not named billy turner in the building last year...he's just so much of a straight ahead athlete though that a lateral and move scheme with the oline does him no favors

I for one am glad they brought back McClendon for camp purposes at least...can't be stuck with a bunch of pillows on contact
