Sorry if this was posted, I did some research but cannot find the answer I am looking for...

Now that Clay has signed the bills offer sheet, does Miami have to counter with a better offer in the sense that the $ per year has to be greater? Or can we increase the TOTAL $ (5yr/$38M) and offer 5yr/$38.5 but have the layout of the contract set up differently. The reason I ask is because the bills made 2016 the year Clays cap hit goes up to like $16 since they knew we had Suh getting paid over $20M that year. Not sure if my question makes sense, just curious, even if I dont think we should spend the money on Clay.

Nope, Buffalo Bills essentially did the negotiating and we can match those terms and keep Clay or let him go to Buffalo.

People are talking about restructuring after year 1 . . . why would he do that? Unless you are guaranteeing the entire contract, he's in a great spot.

This.

Clay is getting paid period. Good for him.

To answer the question the only two options are Fins match Bills contract or Clay is the newest member of the Bills.

If we really wanted to sign him, the time would have been before he ever signed the Bills offer sheet. To me, it's a foregone conclusion that he is gone.

If the $10M roster bonus is true, it could be converted to a signing bonus. He still gets $10M but, it's split over 4 years on the cap at $2.5M a year.

If things don't work out, we don't pay the roster bonus, and he costs $10M over 2 years for one year of play.

If Cameron does not work out, we save $9 of his $10M hit for 2016 by moving him.

Suh's cap hits for 2016 and 2017 can be flipped.

I don't think we will match but appears we could if we wanted to.

Of course we could match . . . . but I'd have to question just wtf they are doing if they decide to.

is it net dollars or gross dollars? because we have no state income tax, we could offer a million or so less over the life of the contract and still be "matching" the net amount clay would receive after taxes. i'm for matching regardless, it just means a lower number for the team. it wouldn't really be fair if we match the exact contract the bills offered and clay ends up with an extra 1.5 million dollars or so.

Clay is so over priced it not even worth considering. If he was even in the ball park of his value their might have been reason to match, we might have been able to sign and trade him and gotten something back but his contract is just to rediculous. But I am happy for him, You'd need and outrageous contract to play up there...

"exact structure" . . . It's very fair, Miami had plenty of other options to get this done. They knew what putting the transition tag on Clay would open up.

That contract has the third most guaranteed money for a tight end.

Not just this year, ever.

Good for Charles Clay. I'll miss him. But not THAT much.

What they said was..after year one Miami could try to restructure....guaranteeing Clay the same money as the original deal...and that he might do it to help the team.

I personally am not comfortable guaranteeing Clay that kind of money.....Suh is elite....Clay is not.

I think they let him go.

NY has a state income tax. Not sure how much of an effect it has on his decision though. I like Clay as the secret weapon player, but if we accumulate elite and near elite talent, we don't need secret weapons. We just go out and win. Good for you Clay, I look forward to seeing Jordan and Jenkins plow into you : )
