You’ll read the Miami Heat “Media Day” quotes all over the internet, including on this site. But just as interesting as what they said, was the way in which they said it. And what struck me was how comfortable the two most critical holdovers, Dwyane Wade and Erik Spoelstra, seemed in the glaring spotlight.

LeBron James barely cracked a smile Monday as he sat on a podium with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.
It was a far cry from the July bash at American Airlines Arena that welcomed him to South Florida - a day filled with big smiles and bigger promises.

The most scrutinized, analyzed and criticized player in the NBA this summer - and one who has yet to play a game for the Heat - is ready to start playing basketball again and distance himself from the personal attacks he's been hearing since leaving Cleveland for Miami.

"I have a lot of motivation," James said from the second unveiling of the Miami Heat's Big Three Monday at a packed media day more fitting for the postseason than the preseason.

The focus on the Miami Heat has mostly been on its new parts.

The arrivals of LeBron James, Chris Bosh and a few others have placed attention on what has changed, but they are reminded of the constant throughout each practice. When it comes time for drills, the flashy newcomers are made aware of the team's foundation.

Before each exercise, coach Erik Spoelstra summons mainstays Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem to the front of the group. It is only fitting the Heat's two longest tenured players lead the sessions.

They talk a lot about teamwork on this Air Force base where the Miami Heat is spending training camp. Sacrifice is another big word.

Pull up a chair and let Udonis Haslem explain what those words mean to him.

Haslem is a Heat forward who earlier this summer was a former Heat forward.

Maybe not technically, but after the Big Three of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh had climbed aboard, it was so obvious there was no room for Haslem that he was in team president Pat Riley's office saying goodbye.

Riley threw him out.

From the moment LeBron James agreed to team with Dwyane Wade, the external notion has been that one would have to change.

Then came media day, when James offered, “I wouldn’t have come here if he was going to be a different player. I don’t want that. I want the same D-Wade that I competed with for seven years.”
