Offseason OL plan

and another reason to want better guard play on this team-

From the Miami Herald today:

28% of all Dolphin running plays last season were stuffed for no gain or a loss. That was the highest rate in the NFL since 2017
and an astounding 46% of their third or fourth down runs were stuffed for no gain or a loss.

Shhh this will turn into another Warren topic if we are not careful

Ray is @JamesWsenior 's father and @Jamesw 's grandpappy. @Ray R fought in the American Revolution with Francis Marion, the famous Swamp Fox.

But, but, but I didn't get into boot camp until 1965.
It started like this:

Once upon a time... - LOL

The important point to make is that I went down to the Naval Reserve Center to sign up - and ended up in the Marine Corps?

It was all "uphill" after that. - LOL

Here's my only issue with that. History has shown that you can sign relatively cheap DL in free agency and this crop of draft able DT's looks deep into the 3rd-4th round.

I think of the 10 picks we have 2-4 should be DL and I could see getting Darius Alexander in the 3rd or Oregon's Jamaree Caldwell in the 4th. I think that position has guys we can get later who at least have the chance to become rotational DTs and future starters.

Quality OL is much tougher and more expensive to sign as free agents. Teams don't let good, young OL walk. Any guard we get is probably going to have age, injury or performance questions. We have to give ourselves the best chance to get some quality, young OL and I think that happens in the first 3 rounds of this draft.

I'd love a combo of Banks/Membou/Zabel in round 1 and then Ratledge/Jackson/Johah Savaiinaea in round 2. I don't think any of those guard prospects make it to round 3, especially to pick 98. I think the right players set us up to have a solid O line for at least a little while. I know we don't have the best track record of selecting the best OL, just saying it's possible to get 2 OL in this draft early who could make a difference.

This is a trenches draft, imo, and it matches up with what Miami needs. I think a good strategy would be to take 4 OL and 3-4 DL in this draft. Won't happen because we'll need safeties, tight ends and other positions and there's probably going to be a guy at pick 13 and/or 48 that proves too good to pass up.
I agree. Heavy on trenches. Also, Miami can't ignore the secondary.

Means we will reach for Kelvin Banks over better players.
In every other pre-draft season I would agree with you. I hate the idea of taking guards or safeties in the first round, particularly over more talented players, but I think it is the only way to fix the biggest perpetual weakness on this team. We don't have the option of free agency fixing the long term issue that exists at the LG and RG spots. We don't have any spot on that line that we're totally comfortable with except for maybe center. There's a couple guys available with that first pick that can play guard and tackle and will upgrade the black hole that is the interior o-line. The hole that sinks any chance for this to be a consistent offense. We're not going to find O-line starters in the 4th and 5th round of this draft and I think the one G we'll get in free agency will most likely be a short term player.

I'm a huge fan of Tyler Warren's but I'm having trouble with the idea that guys in our draft range are going to be that much better than Membou and Banks, if at all. I think Booker would be a reach and a bad scheme fit. I think Zabel at 13 is a reach but good long term and will start on this line right away. Both Membou and Banks can play T and G. They aren't 6'8" and slow footed, they're athletes who have gotten tons of snaps against the highest levels in college football.

The non OL players outside of Warren all come with big question marks or scheme fit issues. I like Stewart and Mykell Williams but the Chubb restructure, the return of Phillips and the potential and production of Chop make them redundant. would rather have Ogbah back and a 4th or 5th round edge guy.

Who else in the middle of the first qualifies as a better pick than the top OL guy in this draft? I like Jalon Walker but where does he play? I didn't see him covering backs or tight ends at Georgia, I saw him do the same things as Chop does. James Pearce, same thing.

I think the 2 top safeties are a reach AND a lesser need than the OL would fill.

Drafting a tackle who probably moves to guard while Paul tries to prove he is our L.T isn't the best use
Disagree
with have giant holes at both guard spots and uncertainty at both T spots, get me a guy who is a potential upgrade at either G or T, and it's a big win for the Dolphins

That is the definition of reach, reaching for a need over best player available
There's definitely a chance Grant is BPA at #13. The guys a blue chip nose tackle. 340 lbs and runs a 4.8 forty. He's they type of guy a team that's "soft" gets to change that moniker.

I'm still team Campbell or Membau at #13 but I'd take Grant before another edge or DB.

Well temporarily, he is taking time to decide if he wants to play next season or retire. If he decides to play next season then we are going to have to give him more money. He is not playing for the league minimum.
Could they just tack on some easily obtained incentives? Or is that wishful thinking?
