Say we sign Randall Gay, who should be much less expensive than Samuel and is also a FA. We sign Adalius Thomas, move Carter to DT and start Roth, Wilkinson at NT. R Wright backs up Roth, Evans is 3rd at NT. Keep our S intact bringing Tillman back for cheap to back up Bell.

Keep Carey at RT and Toledo backhim up, Shelton and Fonoti fight out RG, whoever loses is the backup, Hadnot at C, with Jacox as his backup, sign Dielman for LG and have Jacox and whoever is the backup RG double at back up LG, McIntosh at back up LT.

Keep Ronnie and Morris, let Minor go, if Ricky comes back great if not, we wont cry about it.

Cut Cleo, if he is not the solution, he is part of the problem, keep Pepper in case he gets healthy, I dont care if he goes back to probowl form, as long as he is healthy he is better than Harrington, keep Joey AKA The TO Machine, just cause he has a low cap hit and did cost us a 5th rounder, and he is a decent backup.

At receiver we are just fine Welker will be easy to resign since he is an exclusive rights FA, if anything get rid of Russell and teach Vick STs.

At TE we need a second TE, I dont mind Peele, but if anything better is out there bring it, Graham would be nice.

Then I would love this draft:

1rd. Pick #12. Jake Long OT UM
We obviously need a LT and if this guy makes it to our pick, he definately is BPA.

2nd. Pick #12. Jamarcus Russell QB LSU
No matter if Pep gets back to form, he is the better choice and fit for a vertical passing game. Russell who is in his mold, is also a Saban recruit, who has amazing stats against top notch competition in the SEC.

The lack of premier receivers and a run oriented offense hindered his development some, and didnt play up to his strengths. Better known for being in a QB controversy with a then freshman, now sophomore, who is also a better fit for their current offense and the current coachs recruit.

3rd. Pick #12. Marcus Thomas DT UF
Personal issues will surely drop this guy, who knows how far? This would anyways be great value if he lasted this long, remember Luis Castillo and Claude Wroten had similar problems and still got mpicked right where theyre abilities supposed them to, no pemalties over their behavior, so he may not last this long.
This is an important pick since Kevin Carter doesnt have much left, Vickerson and Manny Wright maybe long gone this offseason, Vickerson not having taken a single regular season snap and being an exclusive rights FA who we may not want back.
Considering Thomas may be gone Carricker and McDonald (Thomas teammate) would be other guys who would probably pull this off, and at the very least we should get Justin Harrell out of TN.

4th. Pick #12. Paul Soliai NT Utah
Traylor retires after this season, Wilkinson is a solid starter, though he doesnt have much left on the tank either, our only backup is Fred Evans who has yet to take a single snap on the pros, plus was nothing but a 7th rd pick. We desperately need depth at this spot, though I dont expect either of this guys to become eventual starters.

5th. Pick #12. Gone to Det.

6th. Pick#12. Dan Bazuin DE CMU
Great passrusher, would be a nice situational player, may develop into an eventual starter as an open end, I think Shaun Phillips watching this kid, great motor, great measurables, just not very polished.

7th. Pick#12. Lorenzo Booker RB FSU
Nice change of pace back, great catching of the backfield, despite his size he has been reasonable durable, great speed, may releif Welker from KR, while Welker remains the man at PR.

UDFA Cory Anderson H-Back Tenn is brought in to play FB.
I just dont like Barnes, not a geat blocker, worst catching. Anderson also brings a TEs size.

Randall Gay? That guy probably has the lowest selling jersey in the entire NFL

Who cares????? I bet he is atleast better than Lehan, is a current starter, and played for Saban for a long time. Plus he will likely come cheap.

Dang my writing must be awful to only get replies about my first paragraph...

LOL

Poor guy his last name is infact funny though...

Earthwind Moreland made me LMAO...

A couple of things...

If Randall Gay has a hard time finding the field as the Packers Dimeback, how could he succeed for us. The Packers are the worst passing defense in the NFL mind you. I'd much rather go after a guy like Asante Samuel, Nate Clements (if he's available), etc. to have a CB that can make plays, and cause TOs. Covering guys isn't our problem. We don't have CBs that can create TOs.

Why cut Cleo? We need a 3rd string QB. Why cut a guy who is dirt cheap, and who a few GMs view as a guy with potential? Of course we're keeping Daunte. We didn't trade a 2nd round pick to just cut him next year. We actually traded him in the anticipation that the real Daunte Culpepper would show up sometime in 2007. If Joey can be traded for more value than what we gave up for him....I'll for it. If not, ya, let's keep him. He's a great guy to have on a football team.

I don't mind the Oline situation. I could live with that. Remember though, Joe Toledo was being tried out at OG. We could very well see him starting there at some point. I would love Dielman or Steinbach. I would even love Leonard Davis and move him back to OG.

Cliff Russell was already cut. I agree. I'd love to see Marcus Vick as our KR/PR/Offensive specialist. It would help out Wes so he could contribute more as our 3rd WR.

As far as your draft picks go...I don't mind the JeMarcus Russell pick. However, he had plenty of playmakers at LSU--Clayton, Bowe, Addai, Green, Doucet, etc. I know I'm forgetting some guys as well. Plus, he's had some very good OLineman. If Thomas fell to the 3rd round, I would go insane. I don't know if he'll drop that far, but if he does...OH Boy! I really don't like the Booker pick. He wouldn't help anywhere on our team I don't think.

Although I don't agree with much of it, it was well done and appreciate the effort and time it took!

good post. most of its pretty realistic(i like the idea of randall gay), except drafting a QB in the 2nd. if we go Oline in the 1st(which we should and long would be a good pick) we have to go linebacker in the 2nd IMO, even if we sign adalius thomas, hes not getting any younger.
either way, i just dont see us using our 2nd on a QB AGAIN. as a matter of fact, unless there is a steal late in the draft i dont see us taking a QB at all. whether anyone agrees or disagrees, our QB situation was dealt with this past offseason. we have our named starter in cpepp, a good backup(and some competition) in harrington, and a young guy to try to groom in lemon. we even have a QB/WR in vick. i just dont see saban spending to much time on that position this offseason.

As far as your draft picks go...First, we don't have a 2nd round draft pick. That pick belongs to Minnesota in the Culpepper trade.

that was last years 2nd.

Nice write up, but 3 Defensive lineman in the draft?--Which would bring the number Saban has drafted in three years to what.....9 or 10... I dont think so. We have issues, but I dont really see D-Line as being one of them.

Jake Long would be an excellent addition.
Jamarcus Russell with the two--not so crazy about, he will be a nice NFL QB IMO...but we have way to many other needs, like DB and OLB.....

Couple things about your draft.

There will be better players, and even better Tackles at #12 then Jake Long.
Secondly, If Russell even has a decent day at the combine, he's going first round. Possibly top 15 pick actually.

Also, i like the Marcus Thomas pick in the third, but if hes there i think Justin Harrell from Tennessee will be better.

And Paul Solai would be amazing. Hes the biggest guy in the draft for d lineman.

decent post but why cut cleo? he is a decent backup and there is no way in hell booker lasts until the 7th round, just because he did not have tons of yards does not mean he does not have talent, he runs a 4.3 and will be a great 3rd down back

Also, i wanna say, Adalius Thomas will be a niner.

Hey I'm sorry about the one comment. I thought it was a good approach. And Gay would be a good value pickup since he shouldnt be too expensive. Ashante Samuel is someone I could say paying a premium for. One he would instantly upgrade our secondary and two he would instantly make the Patriots secondary weaker. Personally I'm sure he'll be resigned by New England so I dont think he'll be aailable
