Am I the only one who finds the Culpepper - Harrington controversy to be really funny?
On one side are the die hard Daunte supporters. They support Daunte because he has so much "talent" and is a proven entity in the past. Of course, the same fans ignore historical facts about his performance before his injury last year. These same fans seem incapable of acknowledging the fact that Culpepper is not healthy, and that his health issues have taken away the best aspect of his game...his legs.
Would these Culpepper fans be willing to rest their favorite QB until he is healthy and play their first round drafted backup QB for awhile? NO, they would rather risk their favorite QB's career (make no mistake, the next significant injury to Daunte will likely end his career after his performance so far), and keep their former NFL starter on the bench backing up in case Daunte gets hurt??? He is hurt.
What really kills me is the argument against Harrington. History tells us that in Detroit, Harrington was unsuccessful, so he can't possibly succeed here, despite different players and a scheme designed to enhance his strengths instead of his weaknesses. These fans base their argument on Joey's history while ignoring Daunte's. They want Joey to start so he can lose, so their guy can finally come in and lose with more talent. Smell the irony?
Harrington fans aren't much better. Joey has had less success than Culpepper over the course of his career, yet people wanting Joey to start seem to think he will be the team's savior, and suddenly we will be back on track. It is an "anybody but Culpepper" deal for them. They are willing to ditch the history of both QB's just for the sake of change, but can't seem to grasp that this team doesn't have the talent to win overall, regardless of the QB behind the center. Still, many of them would also like to see Daunte lose so Joey can show him up and become the starter.
Guys, why can't you just be a fan of the TEAM? I care about winning. I don't care who is making us win, as long as we are getting it done. Daunte is not healthy...if he is our future, I don't want him risking unecessary injury at this point. Harrington will not light it up, but if he can provide even the slightest spark, it would be nice to see something positive. If he blows it, then we are doing the same thing we have been so far...losing. If all he got to do was throw it away before taking a sack, I'd be happy.
Let's get Culpepper healthy before indicting him as being finished, play the guy you brought in for just this scenario, and hope for the best. Maybe it will jar some of these millionare crybabies out of their sleep walking approach to playing. If not, we get a healthy "talented" QB in Daunte, moving into next season ready to start fresh behind what should be a revamped OL. Like Saban says, "If you keep doing things the same way, you can expect the same results"...it's time to make a change.
