Welcome back to Kevin’s Offensive Line review, powered by TIVO. For those of you new to this analysis, I take the first couple of drives and look specifically at how each lineman did and how the play developed.

Play 1: A 3 yard gain over left guard for Ronnie Brown.

RT - Carey: Did fine, shielded the DE off the play.
RG- Anderson - missed his guy who got into the backfield pretty quickly. Brown got by anyway.
C- Hadnot: Missed a chip on the DT but got into the LB and knocked him back.
LG- James: Stalemated with the DT before getting tossed off. DT got in on the tackle.
LT- Shelton: Just missed his guy. Didn’t matter though.
TE: McMichael - Handles the linebacker. Nice job.

Bottom line: Really was about James here. That was the point of attack and James couldn’t get much movement.

Play 2: Strong side toss to Brown for about 5.

RT: Carey - Play ran away from him so not much.
RG: Anderson - same as above.
C- Hadnot: Gets to the second level and takes out a LB. Nice.
LG - James: Gets pushed back again. Someone give this guy some Wheaties.
LT: Shelton - pulls and leads the play. Pretty nimble for a big guy.
TE: McMichael - turns in and seals the DE. Key block really.

Bottom Line. McMichael opens the corner and Ronnie barrels through some tackles.

Play 3: Inside handoff from the Shotgun. Brown gets a couple and a 1st.

RT- Liking Carey. He seals the backside. Good position and form.
RG: Anderson - pulls into the hole a mashes a lb. That’s better.
C- Hadnot: Takes his guy one on one and just moves him back. Not missing Seth at all.
LG- James: Rides his man out of the hole. Nice job.
LT - Shelton: Stands there looking for someone to block.
TE: McMichael: Again makes a good block.

Bottom line: The play is well blocked and Brown really has a chance to make bigger yardage if he picks his way rather than just bulls through. But, it is a short yardage 3rd down play so can’t complain.

Play 4: Quick pass to Chambers. Incomplete.

RT- Carey: Again good position and form nice drop. He’s a new man,
RG: Anderson - holds up against a pretty good bull rush.
C- Hadnot: Misses the blitzer, but Brown comes up and picks the guy up.
LG/LT- James and Shelton block the same guy leaving the hole for the blitzer that Brown gets.

Bottom line. No doubt that there are some communication issues for this line. Hopefully that will sort itself out. Anderson and Hadnot are better in the running game. Both look a little troubled in space. Middle blitzes are going to be an issue.

Play 5: Sammy Morris strong side toss for about 4-5.

Note: This is actually the exact same play as play 2, with about the same result.

RT: Carey - Instead of staying near the line, this time he gets a LB.
RG: Anderson - Engages a DT. Not much.
C- Hadnot: Pulls with the toss but can’t keep up with the play, no factor.
LG - James: Pulls and blocks the Mike lb. Pretty good..
LT: Shelton - Blocks down this time seals the DT.
TE: McMichael - turns in and seals the DE.

Bottom Line: Pretty well blocked again. James leads instead of Shelton, same result. Tackle is actually made by the CB who is being blocked by Chambers. The line handled the front 7 well.

Play 6: Quick out to McMichael. Short gain brings up 4th down.

RT: Carey - Good drop handles the DE.
RG: Anderson - Jax runs a stunt, so Anderson’s man loops out leaving him with little to do.
C- Hadnot: Gets his hands on 99 and keeps him out.
LG - James: Handles the initial rush, but the stunt and the blitz come through his gap.
LT: Shelton - Just gets beat on an inside move. His guy gets on Pep fast. Forces the short throw.

Bottom Line: Pep is forced to a hot read because Shelton gets beat. End of story. Jax didn't even need their blitz.

Drive 2: Miami 1st and 10 from Jax 22.

Play: Brown over RT for about 3. McMichael lined up next to Carey.

TE: McMichael - gets a good initial push on his guy. But the DE slips into the A Gap.
RT: Carey - Gets pushed back initially, but turns his guy.
RG: Anderson - Chips the DT and picks up other DT turns him out. Good.
C- Hadnot: Gets his guy turned out and out of the play fast.
LG - James: Pulls over the RT and leads. Gets delayed by Carey who was pushed back initially.
LT: Shelton - Seals the end.

Bottom Line. The play really fails when Carey gets pushed back initially and prevents James from leading the play more quickly. Brown actually waits for James and that allows the Lbs to clear the other OL and get in on the tackle.

Play: Harrington for a TD to McMichael.

RT: Carey -Gets his man and then handles the stunt looping around him.
RG: Anderson - Easily handles his man.
C- Hadnot: Helps James.
LG - James: Gets pushed back again. But, does eventually get set and hold.
LT: Shelton - Gets the DE pretty easily.
TE: McMichael - Goes out for a pass!

Bottom line: Not only was the pass protection good here, the team handles and passed off rushers that moved from one blocker to another. This was a nice play to watch.

Conclusions:

The blocking looks better this year than last. We are clearly ahead. Not sure if Shelton is much of an upgrade over Mac, he certainly reminded me of Mac with a look out block for Pep. But, lets give it more time.

Anderson was better than I thought. He is going to have his shaky moments in pass protection because of lateral movement, but considering all the crap said about him over the last few weeks, I thought he looked ok.

Hadnot is without a doubt an upgrade at center. He is going to need to read the defense better and help the line adjust to the blitz.

James is agile and can get ahead of a sweep, but he can and does get overpowered. I don’t think he showed a great deal tonight.

Carey was good for the most part. He did get pushed back on one play, but the Jax Dts are pretty good. His pass protection was spot on .

Considering that Jax is so strong in the front 7, I came away pretty happy with what I saw. :dolphins:

Hadnot getting to the 2nd level at center is the huge thing. We've seen how a good center getting to the 2nd level can shred a defense (Mawae vs Thomas).

Definately appreciate the breakdown as I'm a big believer of the games being won at the lines.

Thanks for doing this. I'm loving Hadnot at center, and carey seems light-years better.

Great report, thanks. Anything on Joe Toledo or Joe Berger?

I like it.
Jacksonville Front-7 is a very talented one. For first preseason game..that's a good job.

EDIT: and of course, don't know how I forgot to say: Thanks so much for your OL play-by-play analysis, always enjoyable.

Whew Brother that was an analysis! I did write down in a notebook while I was watching NFL network's showing of the game the down by down plays and results and wrote comments along the way but not a OL specific break down. Your in depthness and insight is greatly appreciated by yours truly.

You pretty much covered it except that I thought James played a bit better than what you credited him for. But, FWIW and IMHO your dead on with Rex. He put his game up another level and many hopes that he continues this trend. One thing I enjoyed seeing is that Carey held his own and did not commit any dumb penalties and seemed to finish off blocks.

I would say the man who would need to show the most improvement is Wade S. Not even focusing on the penalties he did not show much and got pushed around a bit.

I agree...

Thanks for the time and effort. I have TIVO as well, and reviewed the plays you disected. I have a few things to add....

1. Jeno James was blocking Henderson Man on Man for most of these plays. I would rate Henderson as, if not THE best, certainly one of the top 2 or 3 DTs in the League.

2. The other DT, Stroud is pretty darn good too.

3. Carey was blocking a DE not a DT for these plays.

4. I am excited about the future of this line if they played well this early against a stout DL like Jax's.

:ffic: Right on dude. That was a great report. I enjoyed reading it. Its great to hear that Carey is doing so well. If he does well, look for Ronnie to have 1500. That would be awesome.:dolphins:

Good breakdown, Shelton is definitely looking like McIntosh..I actually think it's a wash right now, in terms of who's better..McIntosh maybe better at this point since he's in his 2nd year with Houck, but Shelton got the bucks so you know how that goes...

Thinking of all the rewinding and pausing you had to do sounds awful. Thanks for the sacrifice.
