Here's an interesting comparison of the pressure given up between our 2014 OL vs the 2013 OL. This is only pressure given up by the OL's an not the team.

2014- 12 sacks, 15 hits, and 32 hurries
2013- 41 sacks, 39 hits, and 114 hurries

OT's

2014- 5 sacks, 9 hits, an 12 hurries
2013- 25 sacks, 26 hits, and 69 hurries

Interior

2014- 7 sacks, 6 hits, and 20 hurries
2013- 16 sacks, 13 hits, and 45 hurries.

We can easily see where the improvement has come from. We can also see that in spite of Benton and Lazor, the interior so far has been as bad or worse than a year ago.

Interior is about the same as last year and I don't expect those number to get better with the D-lines we're about to face.

Hickey was a bit limited in what was available in free agency and we can't spend every draft pick on O-line when there are other needs...we drafted 2 as it is. Pouncey is also not up to speed yet IMO.

I guess we'll have to see how the season plays out since we may be blowing the whole thing up anyway if Philbin gets fired. We may switch to a power scheme next year...who knows. If Hickey had been here when Philbin was hired we may have been in better shape in a lot of areas but that's not the reality of the situation.

At first I thought we had gotten worse when I saw this

2014- 12 sacks, 15 hits, and 32 hurries
2013- 41 sacks, 39 hits, and 14 hurries

I think you left out a digit

2014- 12 sacks, 15 hits, and 32 hurries
2013- 41 sacks, 39 hits, and 114 hurries

Hard to say how a healthy Pouncey would have changed things. We likely do not sign Colledge or Satele, and maybe Smith works out better. Who knows?

Your vCash was credited yesterday but, forgot a message. So. Congrats. Think our interior will end up bettor or worse than last year?

At first I thought RT17 was getting real good at avoiding sacks when I saw that the hurries was more than the sacks this year but not last.

Thx for updating. I'm a stickler for stats. LOL.

Don't know. Early on we seemed to be doing well...only 10 sacks in the first 5 games but the last two weeks has me wondering if we're any better inside. We're clearly better at the tackle position but inside we still seem to have fits with solid DTs.

If interior line is the issue then I'd be curious to see of it gets better as Pouncey gets his groove back.

That our guards suck for the most part is of little surprise to anyone. We had cap room and decided a third DT was more important than a starting guard and went dumpster diving with Shelly Smith.

We have to build the interior of this OL to beat two teams, the Bills and the Jets. Their DL's are two of the best, we do that, we are in a good position in the rest of the games. We have to go 4 and 0 in these two games to have any chance of getting out of the division, be it as the winner or as a wild card. And we saw how the Bills manhandled our OL very easily in the first game.

If you can't run the ball [starts inside] and you can't pass protect from the inside, you will continue to struggle.

Run game - not being able to control and get a push inside means you are likely to see penetration on a very regular basis, this will invariably disrupt blocking schemes and the angles the backs take - the running game will not be as successful and especially on short yardage to keep drives going.

Pass game - we might have good tackles, but if a QB can't stand his ground or allowed to hitch step up into the pocket, then the passing game will be severely disrupted. We are now starting to see this - which could coincide with the return of Pouncey.

Run/Pass game combined - if we are able to run the ball with success inside, it means it opens up the outside run game which in turn, both elements open up the play action/movement game for the QB - which as we all know from the various stats - RT is very successful on the move. And in the straight drop back game, it will give RT more time to work through progressions - case in point, the red zone Wallace TD against Chicago.

At this level - OLmen are going to have a level of athleticism to be successful in the league no matter the scheme.

the Zone scheme for the interior three calls for a greater focus on footwork and technique on combo blocks - forget about all this 'can they get to the second level' garbage - if you can't control the first level, it really doesn't matter if a C/G can get to the second level quickly, your run play is already shot to hell as you have naturally created a gap in the OL by this in ability to 'time and move' on the combo stuff inside.

We are in a very unique position to have a Pouncey at Centre with his ability to pull to either side of the box on the outside - this creates greater balance versus him now being on one side.

I say bring back Shelly Smith - get that guy moving the pile inside, he can be covered/assisted in the pass game - but we have to be able to run the ball first.

Saying that though, we still are two big assed, mauler types at Guard that can move and are knowledgeable about the movement and flow of the Zone scheme, short of having a top tier OL.

Put Pouncey at C and things would tighten up. Putting one of the best C at RG is counterproductive.

I think this will tighten up given a little time anyway. Pouncey will catch up soon enough. The encouraging thing is the turnstile tackle problem seems to be behind Miami, Jake who?

Agree 100%. The goal is to find the 5 starters where the weaknesses to attack are minimized.

even though Satale is a below average starter at center, we don't have any quality at guard. Outside of Colledge we don't have a guard that should be starting any games period. Shelly smith is not starting material, neither is Dallas Thomas or Garner

We are top 10 in the league in rushing and 25th in passing. The LAST thing you want to do is bring in a run blocker who pass blocks like Mr MaGoo. The passing game needs more help than the run game, we are running the ball fine. Shelley was good one play in run blocking but would miss a block the next, while missing EVERY play from the snap in pass pro. He is straight up garbage and needs to be cut, I would rather have Garner in there than Shelley.
