Old Timer's Shootout - Dolphins at Colts, 1999

That game is etched into my brain. Crescent Bar and Grill, Boise, Idaho. You knew we were seeing a changing of the guard. Peyton didn't play well, but you knew his time was coming. Good thing Gadsden ran the Go instead of the Hitch, like Jimmy wanted. Dan changed JJ's play. Love it!

I remember that game. Marino was the AFC player of the week but that was his last game for a while due to a bone spur in his shoulder. I thought that was going to be a special year. I believed in the defense, thought Marino still had magic and thought creepy Cecil Collins was the next Bo Jackson 😂.

Marino deserved the accolades, but man, the Dolphins just couldn’t build a complete team in the 90s. In that highlights package alone, you see how many times the running game failed: at the goal line, on a key 3rd and 1 late in the game. It’s all on Marino, all the time. Same as it was with Shula early in the 90s. Only difference is early 90s Marino was younger and uninjured so the team did a bit better in the playoffs but still never good enough. Defense was good enough against a green Payton Manning, at least. But he’d quickly lap them too.

I remember wearing a beer helmet at my Buddys house and spilling the beer all over jumping up when Dan tock back the lead. My roommate at the time was from Indy, a big Colts fan and quite insufferable. So after the victory I photocopied the USA Today sports page showing us winning and taped 70 copies all over his car.

That was such an exciting game. Dan was so good that even when he was broken down he made magic. How about the 90+ yard drive to beat Seattle on the road in the WC game? Featured two ridiculous 3rd or 4th down converts against the blitz on that drive. Turned out to be his last act as the horrible Jax game was the following week.

It was one of the greatest joys to watch that man play football. He was just larger than life as a QB - looked big, in command, unafraid of the rush or to take a hit, intense and a burning will to win. Always had that eye of the tiger face on. Swaggering up to the line when he was in the zone and licking his palms, in total command, defense knowing what was coming yet it didn’t matter - I miss watching him play. He was special. He was unique.

That is so awesome. Do you keep in touch?

Was this the game where Cromwell hit Manning and his was spitting blood?

Great game, thanks for posting.
