I was just looking at the roster and Saban has brought in about 500 new players, and he could assemble an entire new defense if he so wanted. If you had to choose from the current roster, would you prefer the oldtimer Dolphin defense or the newcomer D?

OLD TEAM___________________________NEW TEAM
Jason Taylor_____________________________Kevin Carter
David Bowens____________________________Vonnie Holliday
Larry Chester____________________________Keith Traylor
Jeff Zgonina_____________________________Manuel Wright
Junior Seau______________________________Matt Roth
Zach Thomas____________________________Channing Crowder
Eddie Moore_____________________________Donnie Spragan
Tony Bua_______________________________Tavares Tilman
Yeremiah Bell____________________________Tebuckey Jones
Reggie Howard___________________________Mario Edwards
Sam Madison____________________________Travis Daniels

Looking at it this way, they seem pretty even. Id grade it: DEs (old), DT (new), LB (old), S (new), CB (old). SO i guess id prefer the old D, but add a lance schulters, and that all changes.

Both Ds would actually be average just the way they are i think,
its kinda sick that we can combine them.
and i mean siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick:egads:

who would YOU pick?

well both D's are about equal in talent, with a slight edge for the old.. but big part of the D is the coach so i go with the new D

Nick's the coach in both cases. Wanny certainly never coached a D that had that exact personnel starting.

I would say the old defense since the new one has not stopped a down yet, but if your talking personel I like the up side of the new D...

The old one, eventhough you post backups on the old defense, rather than the starters at some positions.

Damn that was funny.

I'm a bit confused as to how you figured out what was "old" and what was "new". for 2005 season JT, Seau, Zach will be starting. If your looking to the 'phins' future (say 3 years down the road, i.e. saban's building blocks if you will)...carter / holliday / traylor / jones / etc. are all stop-gaps and some of them won't be here after this year anyways.

With a young Oline, drafting brown, locking CC down, hopefully locking McMike down (disappointed in him right now) I think Saban will be strongly targeting Defense in the next draft to try to balance the age of the O and D and then in the future he can go more for need.

he means "new" as in players that saban has brought in during his time here. By "old" he means the players that are on the roster now that were here prior to saban's hiring (they were here last season and are still on the roster now).

Without JT or Zach on the 'new' defense, I'd have to go with the 'old'. I guess mainly because there are so many 'new' players and I haven't seen them play to know whether they would be capable or more capable than the 'old'. I think though with a better defensive mind and scheme that what we saw with the 'old' could be much better.

I will wait till the season is over to decide also...

All I know is that from 2001-2003 (3 seasons), this Defense has given up an average of 20 PPG against +.500 opponents, and I did not mentioned last year (gave up only 21 PPG)...

Our best Defensive unit was in 2000, where we gave up an avg of 15 PPG, since then we have been average at best against winning oponents...

New blood, new schemes and new coaches, hopefully... improvements, cause IMO I am tired of being overrated on Defense...
