that happens sometimes when you're kicking over 50 yards!
With Mare that is happening all year!
Miami Dolphins kicker #10 Olindo Mare attempts but does not connect on a field goal that would have tied the game with seconds remaining against the New York Jets on Sunday October 15, 2006.
Miami Dolphins kicker Olindo Mare walks off the field after missing a 50 yard field goal against the New England Patriots in the fourth quarter of NFL action in Foxboro, Massachusetts October 8, 2006.
Mare misses 55 yarder at Buffalo September 18, 2006.
Mare misses from 53 yards at Jaguars August 12, 2006.
All that contributes to loss of confidence and makes Saban's decision's about kicking field goals questionable. As Tommy Bowden said at the half of a tight game with Florida State this year, "I'm done kicking field goals. I'm done with it." Clemson didn't kick another field goal during the game. They went for two after touchdowns.
Question asked of Alex Marvez
Q: Can you believe Nick Saban chose to punt twice in the second half when the Dolphins were in field-goal range? Bad field conditions or not, he's got to take that chance with the way the defense was playing.
A: After watching Olindo Mare slip on the lousy turf at Gillette Stadium, I understand Saban's approach. In a three-point game, Saban didn't want to risk giving New England the football near midfield if Mare misses again. The Dolphins then proceeded to squander field position on one of Donnie Jones punts when he dropped the snap and was tackled for a loss near midfield. It was an appropriate scene for the Dolphins.
