Without a doubt Pennington has the team's confidence based on what he achieved last season as a leader, and the success he brought as the starting quarterback.
But how far can Pennington REALLY take the Miami Dolphins?
Can this 33-year-old lead the Dolphins to another playoff appearance, and possible take his squad a round deeper? Could this team get to the Super Bowl with the two-time Comeback Player of the Year pulling the trigger?
That's the question management must decide this season before determining if Pennington's stay should be extended (G.M. Jeff Ireland said the Trifecta HAS NOT ruled it out), or whether it's time to hand over the keys to the other Chad.

I think Pennington can accomplish alot in the playoffs as history has proved that you do not need a start QB like Manning. If he can enter the playoffs, make very few mistakes and manage the clock then we should be fine

I believe he can if this O-Line does as great as it looks on paper. The only reason he messed up in the playoffs was because of our line .. it was either get sacked 3 times in a row every possession, or take a chance and try to get it to the receiver

This offense is built around Penny's strengths and weaknesses. So I think the question is not whether Pennington himself can take us to the promised land, but whether this offensive scheme can do so. And I think it's been proven that ball-control offense (coupled with a hard-nosed defense) can win championships. So yes, I think we CAN win big despite the lack of a deep ball.

It's the elite defenses that seem to have always been a bit of a trouble-spot for Penny. We play a lot of them this year so that should certainly help the FO determine whether Penny can bring us to the next level.

If he performs as well as he did last year with this year's brutal schedule, I'm not sure how you can displace him for an unproven rook. EDIT: Right, he's not a rook anymore. But he's still unproven. :)

My prediction is Penny will kick some major tail this year.

Like SRM said it's up to our Oline. He was running for his life against the Ravens.

And if the Bucs can win a Superbowl with Brad Johnson, we sure as h$$ can with Penny.

You beat me to it. :lol2:

Penny won't be the reason, if we don't win a Super Bowl.

Omar has to get with the times!
Penny doesn't even matter this year.
From what is being said around these parts..the only offense we are running is the WILDCAT!

On a serious note. I love Chad Pennington.

i like our chances with pennington at the helm. call me crazy, but if the plan is to make henne the starting qb next season, i don't see how we can challenge for the super bowl with a "rookie" starting quarterback. seems to me that if we have built a team like say the vikings who many think are just solid qb play away from the big game it could be a waste of a season throwing henne in to start in 2010. should pennington play this season at the same level as last (i'm hoping!) i can't see him not staying in control. i'm sure we could win a superbowl with pennington.

If Penny stays healthy he can take us almost anywhere but he cannot do it all himself. We should take a wait and see approach with Penny before we extend him unless he gives us a favorable contract.

Agreed, Pennington can definitely take us all the way, but like you said, he can not do it by himself.

Some treat Pennington like he is just an average quarterback. He is arguably one of the top 10 starting quarterbacks currently in the game. Sure he doesn't have the strongest arm, but he is smart and knows how to take care of the football. He had great statistics last year and was exactly what this young offense needed.

nosleep made a great point about the Buccaneers winning the Super Bowl with Brad Johnson. Another good example is that the Ravens won the Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer. Pennington in my mind can have more success with this offense then either of those two with their respective offenses.

As long as Pennington stays healthy, which is no guarantee, yes he can take this team far. He needs help, but every quarterback in this league needs help for their team to go far. Ben Roethlisberger is a good quarterback, but he never would have won two Super Bowls without a solid defense and a good running game. Same goes for the likes of many quarterbacks such as Eli Manning to name another.

The team will probably have an offense with more passing firepower with Henne at the helm, but there will probably be more turnovers also. Not a shot at Henne, but Henne is more of a risk taker then Pennington. Pennington will turn it over less, but the offense may score less. Henne may turn it over more, but they may also score more touchdowns. They are two different players and both are good options for this team.

If Pennington can stay healthy for a second straight season and lead this team to another playoff appearance, he earns the right to at least come back next year and compete for the starting job. Henne by then will be more then ready to be a starting QB, but you just don't discard a good quarterback like Pennington(assuming he has another big year and stays healthy). The Jets learned the hard way last year when they chose Favre instead of Pennington and they looked like national fools for doing that. Not just at the time of their decision in August, but in Week 17 when Pennington outshined and outclassed the Jets to win the division title and eliminate the Jets from playoff contention.

Teams can win with less than stellar guys at almost any position.
Our 2002 team was pretty close but our offense was too limited with basically only Ricky Williams. Our line overachieved that year but was not any where near a great line. Teams knew that JayFielder could not beat you with arm. The big differance in a fielder and a pennington is accuracy although I think chad even now has a stronger arm. Our defense was pretty damn good but not elite.

Not to mention Trent Dilfer.
