It's early. No doubt about that. But after reading through all the TC reports from the first 4 days, I hold much optimism for our DL this season, specifically at the DT spot. It's funny because a couple of weeks ago I would've said completely different. Back then there were things like we still hadn't drafted Wright and Vickerson looked like he'd never make it onto the training camp field.

Since then, Vickerson's looked like he's got his shhhhhhh together. Now before the crying incident, Manny Wright had been showing why he had so much potential and regarded as one fo the best DT in NCAA had he stayed in college. I especially like Manny's father's comment about how we should all look out - that Manny was a man to be reckoned with after shedding those tears.

I think the thing that intrigues me the most is that both guys have tremendous size ..........ala Daryl Gardener. Ya'll remember him? Hahahah Now Gardener was the same "project" that Vickerson is being considered. Both Wright and Vickerson possess size that when fully utilized, is simply unstoppable in the middle. I have visions of watching those too blow up plays the way Gardener did before he became the chain smokin', Jack Daniels-in-the-bath-tub shmuck he eventually morphed into. I could also envision them as a Stroud-Henderson combination like in JAX.

I'm being extremely optimistic with them obviously .............. but again training camp reports thus far have me likin' what Saban's brewin' at the DT spot. Lord knows we've got plenty of options at DE so the important cog is our tackles. I'm just glad we've got a guy like Saban to help mold a couple of monsterous potentials like Vickerson and Wright.

Our defense is going to rely on this d-line. I personally think this d-line will control the game. No offense should be able to pass all over us, because this defensive line should never allow them to have time. They have to put the fate of the defense in their hands. our secondary won't be the greatest and we all know it. thats why its so paramount that this defense line is always going as hard they can.

So true.......our secondary at this point is going to scare nobody - how weird is that compared to previous years?

You're right, Manny and Vickerson are huge. But that's not even the most intriguing thing about them. Both of them are very athletic for the DT position. I think it will take a couple years to get their heads totally screwed on, but they both have all the tools to be very good at their position.

same here. thought the dline and secondary would be our biggest areas of concern. with schulters signing and daniels showing well, i think our secondary, barring injuries, is at least solid. Two areas I thought would improve, the oline and qb are still up in the air. At least carey looks good

Oh I know....that's why I brought up the Daryl Gardener comparison. Both Vickerson and Wright possess an unbelieveable first step.

I hated seeing surtain go. But im glad we're moving more towards an attacking defense now. the secondarys job now is to keep the plays in front of them. the d lines job is to simply crush them. The linebackers have that between job. they have to cover the middle of the field, but they'll also be blitzing half the time as well. but the d-line has to be the group that does there job well above the call of duty. Jason taylors gotta be the man now. Roth has to bring some excitement. Keith traylor has to be :fatman: . and anything we get from vickerson and wright is icing on the cake.

If our dline applies constant pressure, the linebackers will have free reign to blitz or drop back which will allow our secondary to not have to be as good as last year to be just as effective

Gardener was a 1st round pick... He had way more pressure...

The only thing he really has in common is that he took plays off like Manny in college. Other than that Gardener really doesn’t compare to either...
