One of the best single bottom-line posts on the Ricky situation

Speaking of which ... I just owned somebody on the main board who shot down comparisons of the Williams retirement to the Barry Sanders retirement -- which, except for the drug issues, were remarkably similar.

hey dr. Z-

i've been a fan of the team since '72. been passionate about them since '87. been a member of this board for almost three years. in all that time, i have never been so personally disrupted by a single event. one that hasn't even officially happened. make all the comparisons to barry and tout all his talent and ablity...i won't deny them.

there is something inherently deeper that is wrong with this situation. if ricky comes back and plays i will neither cheer nor boo his personal achievements. nor will i kick him when he's down, and i am quite sure at some point he will be down. i will, however root for my team. i will be exhuberant with victories and dispondant with loses regardless of the individuals that play for them.

ricky has a universe full of potential still, he is an extremely talented individual. i just have this feeling his potential for disruption far outways that talent he posses'.

i don't know. maybe i'm making too much of this. maybe not.

I have to respectfully disagree with the Sanders comparison. He was over thirty, obviously didnt have his heart in it anymore and decided he was done. Ricky is a pot smoking fool that changed his story of why he quit everytime he has opened up his mouth since, and now is unretireing.

I think the Sanders comparison was to emphasize that most people, including players, were down on Ricky not because he quit, but WHEN he quit. Everyone keeps saying he left the team in a lurch and with no time to do anything different."Doc's" point is that Sanders timing was the same, but yet it is okay with everyone. A very valid and good point. Does it make it different because it was realted to failed drug tests? Maybe. That's an indiviudual choice. For me, I do not forget this important fact. This is a game. Its entertainment. I leave social and moral standards to be set by families and their faith. If this sport is going to allow Ray Lewis to participate in a murder scam and then embrace him as the epitome of defensive leadership, and allow steroids to eat Lyle Alzado up and die, and allow Mike Webster to die pennyless and a broken man, and to allow Warren Moon, Randy Moss, Lawrence Phillips, Chris Carter, Andre Rison,Eugne Robinson and all the others do what they have done, then what the hell is the big deal about Ricky and Pot? When it come to "values" this league has a shaky track record at best. Don't start preaching them at me now when I went through a 4 win season last year. We need all the help we can get. And I am all about winning in my sports entertainment. If Saban God thinks Ricky can help us win and takes him back, if Zach and JT are willing to take him back, then I am willing to take him back. I will dust off my #34 jersey and wear it proud.
