Opinions on what the coaching staff is thinking about with our OL personel

they will have to check down more and run shorter patterns
if the line cant sustain blocks past 3 seconds at least they have
some players who can turn short gains into big gains that should make a big difference

I think Coach Sparano believes he is an Oline genius and can just plug in anyone he wants.

With all of the really solid F/A interior O-linemen who were out there in F/A, I think that both SPARANO and IRELAND will soon be unemployed. All they seem to know how to do is run a Retirement Home for washed-up DALLAS rejects.

Fluffy Sparano thinks he has to get lucky to keep his job & will just talk fluff. His job is in Henne's hands.

Ireland is probably thinking he better get this fixed next year, or he'll get Harbaughed too.

This is nothing new with the OL:
Were crappy 2 years ago.
Were crappier last year.
Are crappiest this year.

Actually the O-line was quite good a couple of years ago. They were ranked in the Top 4 in the NFL for both pass protection AND the running game (footballoutsiders). When Smiley and Grove were in there, and Carey was a lot better than he is now, that 2009 offensive line was very good all season after that blip on the radar in week 1 vs Atlanta.

On defense though, it was a different matter entirely. That defense totally sucked ( IE - Miami's O-line was so good they had a 45+ minute time-of-possession game vs the colts but that atrocious Miami defense lost the game in just 14 minutes of playing time on the field)

That 2009 offensive line was paving the way very nicely for a great majority of that season. They ran over many defenses. And overall the pass protection was very good as well (save for about 3 games where they gave up half of the sacks they gave up all season in those 3 games).

Well, Jerry is still there. And they are currently running with 8, so they must really like the 3 guys on the bench. Carey might be the key. Colombo is already a known struggle. Carey has to regain some push, or it will be a long year on the right side. Maybe Miami will line Yeatman to that side alot.

There is no true answer! Anyone who has played the sport and enjoy's the sport can tell you there is issues with this line, if we see it how are they going into the season like this. Talking to Dallas fans they said Columbo is washed up and needed to go. Why would our head coach who is offensive line minded take this guy. More and more I feel our upper management can not negotiate to get players so they settle for leftovers. I hope we are proved wrong, but man Columbo looked bad and Carey looks old out there..... Reggie don't run on that side!!! What are coaching staff is thinking is a little beyond me... Unless there is a plan they have not exposed yet.

they are praying that the lg we draft to play center works out

I think the coaches are not as big of idiots as most "experts" here seem to apply and that they are very aware of the OL's shortcomings and will play call accordingly. Teams know which side is our problem and will either over attack and we can screen right past them or they will try to "trick" us and push harder on the other side (which isn't going anywhere with Long there) which will give Henne more time.
It's not like the right side is so bad that DL's are going to run through untouched. When our starters were in during the preseason against opposing starters Henne was leading all QB's in the league.....and that was a watered down playbook.

I think the coaches have shown that when there is a problem they address it. In 09 the defense was a big problem and they brought in Nolan. In 10 the special teams were atrocious against NE, and they made changes. The O-line was also bad in 10, and they drafted a guy in the 1st round. Our QB situation would have been fine for 3 years now if Pennington had not gotten injured. We looked at a few QBs in free agency and explored trades, but they did not think anyone of those guys was an upgrade over Henne. If Henne can continue to play like he did in preseason, the QB situation will be fine.

I agree that the O-line still does not look good, but the coaches are the ones with their jobs on the line. You would like to think that if their jobs are on the line and they saw a need, they will address it. They must see something we don't. That or they are incompetent and will be fired after the season. I want to believe it is the first one.

In threads like these, you can easily see who knows football and do a good job of passing up knowledge, and who might know footbal, but are to angry to let everybody know...

I've been saying for a while now that this is the one area of the team that should be an absolute strength considering the draft picks and money we've poured into it, and the supposed o-line expertise of our head coach. The fact that it's the glaring weakness of the team is an absolute embarrassment.

Hopefully, the left side and center could settle into a pretty good unit with Long and Incognito together another year and if Pouncey lives up to his draft status. I'm sure he'll have rookie growing pains, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

They just seem to have no answers for the right side. I agree that Carey wasn't living up to his salary and isn't a top RT, but I think we'd be better off to keep him at a familiar position and try to patch up the RG spot. It would be one thing if we had an upgrade at RT to try sliding him to RG. But it would seem that he's still our best option at RT, and at least he knows the position (remeber continuity Tony?) There's no guarantee he'll be even serviceable at guard, and now our RT position is a train wreck.

I think our running backs and tight ends are going to have a busy year chipping and blocking on the right!

i guess our coaches know the short-comings on our right side, but who could we line up there who's better than what we currently have? Garner hasn't been too hot himself. Jerry looks like he has forgotten how to play football. i'm concerned about that line, but it's the best we have right now

The way I see it, The only player who really has no place being a starter in this league is Columbo... All of the others fit from at least serviceable to all-pro wich is not that bad considering we've hadded weapons at skill positions and you just cant have pro-bowl player at every position on a football team...

wow, i don't want to be here when late April rolls around and Miami
has drafted OL in rnds 1, 2 or 3... even if it was justified

At this point, it is looking like this team is going to need to spend most of next off-seasons free agent money on the ol. As far as the draft goes, I am sure we spend 1-2 picks on o line.
