I have been to about 30 games in the orange bowl during the early 80's (including playoffs) . And when the dolphins moved to that concrete slab formerly known as Joe Robbie Stadium, I sensed the crowd and energy of the team changed.

My goodness, I wish some of you young folks could have experienced the electricity of the dolphins in the orange bowl.. I have been to many football games in the northeast and all around the US . And nothing compares to the orange bowl back then.. In the orange bowl , you were right on top of the field.. In JRS, the sidelines are so far away from the seats because they had to make it accomodating for baseball as well.

I am not clamoring to have the dolphins move back to the orange bowl, it will never happen for financial reasons, but that stadium was so intimate to watch an NFL game. It was a madhouse..

Nothing like it when the opposing offense is 3rd and long and the stadium is shaking because people are stomping their feet and yelling.. You can't do that in JRS because when you stomp your feet on concrete , all you do is end up hurting yourself with silent groans . The orange bowl had a sense of charm, maybe it was the view of downtown Miami in the east end zone.. Or back in the day when Flipper was in the pool at the east end zone .. Whatever it was, it just rocked !!

In comparison, Joe Robbie Stadium seems way too plastic and not very fan friendly .

We definitely had a strong home field advantage back then that I think we lost.. Even lost it very soon after moving to JRS .

Just look at the crowds in the orange bowl.. Look at this clip of the 1985 season and look at the crowd frenzy when the Dolphins are introduced onto the field vs the 85 Bears who were 13-0 at the time.. Back then, the Crowds didn't come in late filling the stadium during the 2nd quarter, in the orange bowl the seats were filled EARLY during warmups !!

It was like that ALL the time in the orange bowl back then.. Absolutely the best times of my life as a sports fan... I still get goosebumps thinking of those raucious crowds .. . Joe Robbie Stadium is a snoozefest in comparison .

it is called Dolphin Stadium now.

I wish we would've just refurbished the Orange Bowl and stayed there. The seats were closer to the field and it was a real home field advantage. Dolphins Stadium has many empty seats at home games and people sit on their hands. It's sickening, we need to make some noise!!!!!!!!!!!! :tantrum:

Well you can't blame the stadium for fans not being loud. But it is a trend throughout sports that our beloved sports landmarks are being torn down for larger, more modern stadiums. If you've travelled any.. Dolphins stadium is actually pretty nice. When the team improves... you'll hear a loud stadium. But from what I've read and head... fans in south florida just dont have the same disposition as towns like Pittsburg, or Green Bay..

Listening to those clips, you hear the great Rick Weaver. Best play-by-play guy we ever had. Back when the games were on 610.

Basically when the team is playing like such scumbags and not showing even the slightest sign of life, that's what they're gonna get. We rooted pretty hard for 3 and a half quarters. They still wont do anything? FINE! THen I stopped screaming halfway thru the 4th. That's what they get.

The reality is that the BOTH of you are correct.

Mastr is right that the OB is flat out just a better designed stadium for fan noise. Closer to the field, steeper stands and a metal frame. The place did in fact rock. Many games the crowd was so loud that you could see tv cameras shaking on telecasts.

If you fill the OB and Joe Robbie (Yes I still call it Joe Robbie as well) with the exact amount of fans screaming equally, the OB is going to be much louder.

Canadian, you are also right.
It's not just the design aspect.
The Fan base at Joe Robbie/Dolphins stadium changed from when we were at the OB.
It is NOT as rowdy a crowd.
Bottom line is that when Joe Robbie was built ticket prices started going uphill. Not talking end zone specials but you never had sky boxes or "club seats" at the OB. Much of the lower level and especially the club seats are priced well out of the avg. fans price range. Many of these seats are held by corp's that give them away as gifts to many people who could give a rats arse about the game.

In closing, Dolphins stadium is not set up well for crowd noise AND has dedicated much more seating geared towards corp. yuppies that take up good seats and many times don't show up at all. Both of you are correct.

I miss the days of the OB, actually every time I walk into Dolphins stadium I think about the OB.

:boohoo: maybe just maybe, the teams that played in the orange bowl were much, much better than the teams that have played in dolphin stadium. let's be realistic, we really haven't had a LEGIT super bowl contending team since 1985. it is pretty sad to see how far we have fallen since the early 80's. we have just been a decent team(with some very mediocre teams in there) for almost 2 decades, nowhere in that time period have we been even remotely close to winning it all.

.

My greatest memory EVER as a Phin fan.

My dad came down from Atlanta to go to that game with me. We sat corner endzone (closed end). When Jim Mcmahon came into the game late to try and spark a comeback, the crowd was so loud, he took a delay of game penalty, took a timeout and then got sacked. The noise was so deafening my ears hurt.

Anyone who completely dismisses the difference in noise between the OB and Dolphins stadium simply never attended a Phins game at the OB.

for a sold-out game the stadium did seem kind of empty.

Thats what kills me! Obviously the game on sunday turned out to be crap....but its not like fans would have known this prior to the game. With all the hype, the coaching, Daunte, etc.....you would have thought that would be reason for fans to pack the stadium for the HOME opener, but it still wasn't. I and others complained about fan attendence a few years back and the rebuttle was always "well, we're not very good now (which was the end of the Wanny era)." Ok, I can buy that.

But now whats the excuse???!? Even crappy teams in the NFL get fans to go to the games. Sure, there are other things to do in South Florida, but is it the only place in the country where there are other things to do besides watch football??? I dont know, this has been really puzzling to me the last few years. The only thing that could help the problem would be a retractable roof or new stadium which is smaller, with less capacity crowd (though I highly doubt a new stadium is on the horizon). But what do I know, just my opinion.

I don't get how a retractable roof is going to help things.

We packed the OB during day games with no problem.
If you close the roof during day games you take away your weather advantage.

I really don't get how making a smaller stadium is going to help attendance at all.

You want to just make it "look" fuller by having fewer seats?

Dosen't solve anything.

I guess I didnt realize how stupid my opinion was. Anyway, my first thought is people won't go to the games because its too hot. I dont know how that could have changed from the orangne bowl days to now, so who knows. With a smaller stadium it would have less empty seats and combined with the roof, would make it louder possibly. I really dont know, I'm just throwing things out there.
