Our choices when replacing Flores were perhaps more than we can account but we can sum this to the following coaches:

1. Sean Payton
2. Brian Daboll
3. Mike McDaniel

It seems like the rumors during that infamous offseason weren't just rumors, in fact, the league penalize us for some decisions we made. A lot of the fanbase was enamored with the idea of Payton so much that it almost felt that anything else was just not a very good option. In light of recent events in the NFL this season we can clearly see the success of the coaches that were perhaps primordial choices. There is no reason to doubt McDaniel at this point even if we perhaps fail to make it to the Super Bowl because he has brought an atmosphere to this team that is different from previous coaches. It is still a bit ironic that some point many fans were so disappointed that neither Payton nor Daboll workout for us that they didn't see much hope in McDaniel, and I was one of those skeptical fans. Then again, who can seriously have predicted that we would be the best offense in the NFL, rivaling those offenses like the Chiefs? One thing is for sure, Payton wasn't favorable of Tua and based on things we heard of Payton as a commentator in the league, Tua most likely wouldn't have been someone favorable in running his offense. I can't say much about Daboll but things are not looking good for the Giants right now. And if this continues perhaps it wouldn't be unjust to think that he might find himself as a coordinator in the future. What would have his tenure been here? I don't know, but I feel as if the only coach that had the capacity to put Tua on the map would be no other than Coach McDaniel so I am happy to have both here right now.

Thoughts?

Grier went out on a limb. No doubt about it. Ppl said his fate was tied to our previous HC. While I never believed that, I do think if McD had been a failure, Grier would be out on his butt.

After the tampering fiasco, which getting caught now seems like we dodged a fatal bullet, my guess is McD was the only candidate that was all in on moving forward with Tua.

We got lucky for a change.

And the Ross jock-swingers came at me because I said Ross bumbled into McD...which he did. Mistake after mistake over several years in multiple coach hire attempts, then went with their third option this time around. Not only did McD bring stability, a new attitude, and enjoyment back, he is maximizing the superb QB he walked into, even though the team management was obviously on the outs with him.

McD may have been the only candidate that said, "hell ya I can win with Tua, he's got all the talent" of those three guys...may be why he was their third choice. That's speculation of course, but it's not unreasonable.

BIG time lucked into McD, that's a fact, and I don't give Ross any credit for making a shrewd, strong hire.

I had McD and Daboll as my top two. At the time I said it would come down to who they were bringing with them in terms of staff. The one thing that had McD a hair higher for me was how much I liked the SF run game. So I was never disappointed when McD was hired. I was flat out excited.

Flores, Gase, Philbin, Sparano, Cameron were never guys I was excited about. The last coach I was excited about hiring was Saban. And Jimmy Johnson before that.

Didn’t want Daboll. Didn’t want Payton. I did want Doug Pederson, though. At this point, things have worked out as well as we could have hoped. I still like Pederson, but who knows if the roster would be the same if Pederson was the head coach Instead of McD.

Everyone saying they wanted McDaniel from the very beginning even when we were still in the running for Peyton better post receipts

I think most of us who were around through all those would agree 100%.

I wanted Pederson, but man who knew McD really was an evil genius! 😁 But McD's greatest accomplishment has been how he has rebuilt Tua piece by piece. This was a young man beaten down by injuries, fans, the media, and his own head coach. That phone call on the plane will live in infamy, as that was the start of what I call "The Rise of Tua".

I absolutely did. I wanted a fresh young offensive mind. Coaches that are on their second gig after winning a super bowl with a previous team don't have a great track record. I'm not doing it, but if you don't believe me, check my history. Edit: I did find my original post about McDaniel. It's post #13 in this thread.

I wanted someone with experience, because the last 3 Head Coaches (Flores, Gase, and Philbin) had no experience as a Head Coach. And, not only that, but all 3 were Coordinators in name only since Belichick ran the NE defense, Gase fetched coffee for Peyton Manning, and Philbin organized practices for Green Bay. I wanted Doug Pederson because he has had some success and has a history with the Dolphins, and I saw McDaniel as just another Coordinator (for one season) in name only while Kyle Shanahan called all of the plays.

I wasn't very impressed with McDaniel last year, as too many things were bad, such as in-game management, getting plays in on time, poor challenges, getting away from the running game and relying too much on the deep ball, and a lack of effective adjustments. That said, it was a pleasant surprise to see this year's offense and a huge improvement in game management.

However, while McDaniel has got the offense rolling, the defense is now the problem. Many called Fangio a defensive genius, and on paper, Miami has more talent on defense this year than last year. So, I was expecting at least an average defense that would get better as the season goes on, but that hasn't been the case. Miami is the #2 Seed in the AFC because of their offense, but their defense has given up more points than any other team in the conference. I understand having patience with McDaniel because he was new and was learning on the job, but Fangio has tons of experience and should be able to figure out some way to make the defense better. For as much as everyone complained about Boyer last season, both losses to Buffalo were by just 3 points, while Fangio's defense got steamrolled, losing 48-20. From what I can see, Fangio isn't much of a genius, and with his amount of experience he doesn't deserve our patience.

I wanted Pederson too. I wasn’t a fan of Payton. Then when it came down to McD and Daboll I wasn’t really sure. I do remember that once Daboll committed to the Giants and everyone on here finally started warming up to the idea it was going to be McD, one thing I remember reading (on here) was that he would be open and able to bring in quality assistants. That’s was exciting and he was “Buying in” to Tua, so that was exciting too because we were out invested in Tua and things didn’t look to good at that time. No matter what happens going forward, to date, it honestly couldn’t have worked out any better

Some here still blame Ross for many of this team's troubles, yet he's spent lavishly to get a competitive squad. Somebody here said "Ross lucked into McD"? That is bullsh*t. Peyton was out of the picture by then. Nobody wants to lose a 1st round pick for tampering but it happens. (See the Don Shula episode) I am glad we didn't get Peyton here as a HC. I think he lucked into a Drew Brees that was pissed about how the Chargers dumped him, and was driven to excel, along with years of high draft choices in NO due to lack of competitiveness. Ross the Billionaire is probably not used to being told he can't go spend his money on what he wants to.
