We recently went at it about the secondary in a thread not so long ago. Some reasonably understood that we may or may not have upgraded the secondary...we're all optimistic that if they blossum, they could really catapult this D into elite status, but the question is...will the assumed starters be the right starters, or are a combo of the second tier guys really are the real guys,..i.e., can poole reclaim his early last season mini camps starting positon over Daniels, will Will Allen improve his long ball defense, and take pressure off the Safties. Can Jason Allen catch on quick enough to start this year? or does Tillman and Bell improve upon last year's performance and keep some continuity from last year..If we really change 3 of the 4 starters or 4 of the 4 starters from last year, do we take a step back?

Read and discuss..

We have lots of depth? Hmm. if they're so good, why was a lot of these guys FA's again..oh yea salary cap casuties, yea, that's the ticket, and we were able to sign them all to those big contracts...man we can't have any cap left after signing all these great DB's...so there's no questions in the secondary at all..:shakeno: Now as a fan, I really, really hope not, but as a football fan, I know there's some questions to be answered, so I'll wait until the secondary proves on the field what we hope, and all those FA's show why they shouldn't have been let go..like they had big cap numbers in the first place..

I'm not sure who the starters will end up being but I do know that if they stay healthy we do have much more depth then we had last year and I'm excited to watch how it all works out during training camp. Trying to answer your questions now is a little premature.

The patriots didnt have big name dbs either, except for Law and Harrison. I hope Allen can be our harrison.

Questionable, definetely simply because no one has seen these guys play as a unit before ever, but an upgrade I believe most certainly.

The same questions, doubts, theories, remarks, homerisms, other comments are still valid one week later. We won't know until we see them play.

So what you are saying is...a player who is a salary cap casualty is not a good player? Besides, not everyone we signed was a salary cap casualty.
Renaldo Hill didn't re-sign with Oakland because he wanted to play for a winning team. Will Allen was not re-signed because they felt he wasn't a playmaker, meaning although his cover skills are great he dropped too many potential interceptions. Andre Goodman left Detroit because, well it's Detroit. Sure there are questions in the secondary, just like every other position, and none of them can be answered until training camp begins.

Well, the secondary rotation is up in the air right now. We willl have all but possibly one new starter back there come Sept, but if you look at what we have in the secondary overall, it's much better and deeper than in the past 4-5 years...Hill, Goodman, Bell, Tillman, W. Allen, Poole, Daniels all have starting potential or have been starters. J. Allen is probably going to be the highlight of the secondary once he learns the system. Mitchell could turn a head or two as well coming back from his injury...I think it's going to be a fun battle to watch and see who gets the starting nods...we could even see Daniels as our nickel guy and in only on certain packages and he was arguably our best DB last year...

But this all has to be proven out in our play. How quickly the guys gel, the star and money packages gel, etc will determine how good this D can be. There haven't been any major changes in the front 7 except that there will be a battle for the 3rd and 4th LB. That could be the one area that we haven't upgraded in yet. And that is tempered because as a player, Jr was better than anyone we have who is replacing him, but Jr, for all his playing prowess couldn't stay healthy. Hodge, Spraghan, Newman, etc all are good LBs, but not Jr. good, when healthy...

Couple this improvement in talent with the potential for the offense to be very special (now that we have a QB) and it could be fun this year. Of course, the big question is still at QB...but either way (DC or JH), we have better QBs than Gus, AJ or Ears at this point and they will only improve.

Personally, IMO, this could be a special year for us. I think this year we establish that the 6 game streak wasn't a fluke and that this team is one to be reckoned with. Now, for us to move to the next level (beyond the first round of the playoffs), we still need a piece or more and we need to see this young secondary develop and then we'll have to replace some aging defenders in the next year or two...but it's going to be very fun to watch things play out...

What IF??? What if we wait till they start ripping up Offences, then we start looking at what the weak points are?

I like the way the secondary is shaping up. While no one (except the coaching staff) knows if we have upgraded the talent (I believe we have) we have definately upgraded the speed and athleticism of the secondary. Madison doesn't really fit into what Coach likes in his CB's and while I think Lance did a credible job his lack of footspeed showed. I am worried more about the run defense than the secondary. I think we slipped quite a it in that area last season.

At the very least the secondary will be as good as last year. break it down:
CB Madison and Daniels< Allen and Poole/Daniels
S Schulters and Jones = Allen/Bell/Hill/Cooper
Nickel Howard<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Poole/Daniels
And Depth is not even close. We are def better depth wise.

I loved madison the entire time he was here, but you wont see WR's flying past Will Allen the way you saw them flyin past Madison last year, AND the year before.. and NO MATTER WHO plays nickel, it could be Terrell Buckley, and they would do a better job than Reggie 'i hope they dont score' Howard. there is NO way our secondary is worse than last year. it can only be better

Will Allen and Renaldo Hill were huge contributors to their respective teams, Andre Goodman and Deke Cooper both were seen as valuable nickel and special teams guys respectively before actually starting a number of games last year due to injuries. Will Poole was a solid contributor in his rookie year. I think we have made some good moves in the secondary. It isnt always about the big name and the big contract, and Saban will continue to build the secondary this way.

In Andre Goodman's defense as to why he is a free agent.... He played for detroit. After picking off three passes in his first eight games, he got benched. When you get cut by a front office who at times make Speilman look like Einstein, it's not because you lack talent.
