i really think people must be playing a joke on me. Some of these posts are terrible!!! Our defense was great today? Pennington picking us apart? I didnt see it. Howard is bad but thats it. Do you expect them to shut the other team every game.
Admittedly Howard was terrible today. But, the point being offered is the Defense's ability to shut a team down when it counts. You can dominate for 3 quarters, but if you do not shut the opponent down in the 4th quarter you will still lose. This defense has been a statistical giant for years. But, they have lacked the ability to close it out when it MATTERED. Previous games against the Jets illustrate this.
Our offense struggled and showed the inevitable signs of inexperience and lack of knowledge and execution. But, the Defense SHOULD respond when the Offense does score. You shut out the Jets for 3 quarters while your Offense struggles, then give up when they finally score?
Sorry, that doesn't cut it. A game is 4 quarters, not 3.
In regards to Pennington.... that was the most lame duck throwing exhibition I have seen in years. As slow as those passes were coming, our secondary should have been contesting every pass. Instead, those parachute passes were finding WIDE OPEN receivers. That was pathetic coverage. Furthermore, we are not getting interior penetration. We are getting pressure around the edges, but nothing up the middle. And, with the exception of Seau, the LBs need to step up. Zach is showing age and not getting penetration like he used to. Crowder needs to learn more discipline (as is the case with rookies).
Offensively, it appears the interior of the line is doing better at times. But, it seems no matter how well the interior does, you can't help but notice the penetration the tackle opposite of Carey is allowing (no matter where Carey aligns).
Ronnie Brown appears to tentative right now. And he appears to be reacting too much. I realize those fans on the site WANT to support him because of his #2 status and pay, but I will tell you we had better thank our lucky stars Ricky will be returning. Ricky will give us that PUNCH we lack. And, his presence will solidify the line. He simply commands that much respect.
For all those who hate Ricky and love Ronnie, Ricky is the benchmark... Ronnie has a long way to go. Disappointedly so, I might add. I see the ability in Ronnie WHEN he simply stops thinking and plays... but, I think his transition to the NFL is best done in the shadows of Ricky. And, I for one hope Ricky is resigned. His silent leadership and workman-like attitude will be needed if we are to make a run this year.
Admit fellas, how many defenders has our RBs run over this year? Ricky will bring the wood and the line will gain that smashmouth attitude we need. Right now, we simply do not possess the smashmouth attitude. The offense as a whole is reacting and not dictating.
Also, Chris Chambers is disappearing from the landscape. Sure, he does the intangibles as many have noted on this site, but if he IS elite, he should not be dropping passes when the offense is trying to find rhythm. He should not be dropping passes on critical downs when the offense is struggling to move the ball. If he IS elite, he should not need excuses. He can make the clutch catch. He can make impossible receptions. But, too many times he is disappearing when we need him the most. I don't question his ability, I do question his lack of aggressive attitude and ability to take over a game. And THOSE intangibles are what make a WR elite.
Personally, I think Chambers would do better as the #2 or #3 with Boston as #1. Boston possesses the attitude and speed to be a #1. Not too mention, he has been the #1 and STILL posted the stats. Chambers has done better when he is not the focus (statistically). I'm not saying I dislike Chambers, I am simply saying the assumption that Chambers is best AS #1 may be flawed.
Sure, hose me, but it is my opinion.
