Imo it always goes back to the way you draft. There was a time when we had no free agency so it was just the draft or trades to get players. Now of course we have free agency. Since 84, we have drafted horrible, made terrible trades and got the wrong free agents too. It's not just ireland and tanne-dumb. It really started with Shula making that stupid trade for Hugh Green and his bad drafts to all the bad moves by Wanny all the way to now. I know it's not always about your first round pick but it does starts there. You miss on that and you're off to a bad start. I loved Shula but he started this back in 84. SIX years in a row where we go nothing from our first round picks and 7 out of 8 years he drafted nothing but bust after bust. Our last two GM's have messed up in both free agency and draft picks plus giving out dumb contracts or taking on bad contracts. We're way over due for a good GM. Look at what we've done in the first round since 84 and you'll see where the problem started and it hasn't stop yet.

84-Shipp(bust)
85-Hampton(bust)
86-no pick
87-Bosa(bust)
88-Kumerow(bust)
89-Smith(bust)Oliver(decent)
90-Webb(great player)
91-Hill(bust)
92-Vincent(good player that we let go) Coleman(average)
93-Mcduffie(very good player)
94-Bowens(very good player)
95-Milner(bust)
96-JJ now HC-Gardener(good player)
97-Green(bust)
98-Avery(bust)
99-no pick
00-no pick
01-Fletcher(bust, way to go Wanny)
02-no pick
03-no pick
04-Carey(ok but should have taken Wilford)
05-Brown(bust and could have a drafted a certain QB)
06-Allen(bust)
07-Ginn(bust)
08-Long(good but could have drafted a certain QB)
09-Davis(never all that with us but could have been)
10-Odrick(screw you ireland)
11-Pouncey(overrated)
12-Tanny(that's another 68 threads)
13-Jordan(screw you ireland)
14-James(turning to be a bust)
15-Parker(jury's still out)
16-Tunsil(jury's still out)

That's 15 first rounders that imo were busts plus 4 years with no first round pick so out of 33 years that's 19 first rounds wasted. Not a single hall of famer and only 4 players that actually played in a pro bowl. To be fair JJ drafted Zach(5)JT(3)Madison(2)and Surtain(2) after the first round. Now as you can see, the problems started long ago and nobody has fixed it. Ireland had a great chance to fix it with "money and picks" and totally blew it in 2013.

If we're going to fix this team we need to draft smart and get the right free agents. In free agency just go for the top guards once and for all. Guards that are actually proven guards. Maybe a dynamic LB and corner and go play maker on draft day and please, don't wasted any more picks moving up. Most of the time the best trades are the ones you DON'T make.

Believe me, it was hard to put that list together of first rounders. that's missing 19 out of 33 years. Very sad indeed. Pitt once drafted 4 hall of famers in ONE draft. The last time we drafted ONE was 83(Marino) so in the last 33 years we have not drafted a SINGLE hall of famer. Just wow

Not to mention what Bill Walsh did in his 2nd or third draft (~1981).

I believe it was 81 when he drafted 3 DB's that all ended in the pro bowl at some point including Ronnie Lott. I mean even a broken clock it's right twice a day. How can we not draft a single hall of famer in 33 years?

Well, in fairness, Taylor and Thomas may one day be in the Hall of Fame (they're not locks though). So there's that.

Other than that-- zippo.

It's possible thought not likely that they both get in but still doesn't change the fact when it comes to the first round, the last one was Marino. That's horrible and only 4 guys that went to the pro bowl and that's counting Tim Bowens who I believe made it just once and 3 of them(Webb, Long and Pouncey)were olinemen so when it comes to drafting skill positions players it has been horrendous.

I believe Taylor gets in this year (2017)

Miami showed they are consistent by drafting poorly in the rest of the rounds as well.

Beginning in 1984 Marino was so good he elevated the Dolphins to winning season after winning season (a few .500 seasons) with a team that probably would have finished with 3-6 wins with an average QB. So Miami consistently drafted in the 20th pick range where blue-chip talent was less likely to find.

As much as I loved Coach Shula his philosophy didn't pan out when it came to drafting which I saw an interview even he admitted. The philosophy was to draft lighter weight lineman because of the hot and humid weather in Miami thinking the bigger players would get worn down. Just the opposite happened as the lighter lineman wore down from battling against bigger players.

The only exception was Jimmy Johnson who drafted 44 players in his 4 years which equates to 11 draft picks for 7 rounds. He was a master of the trade down. But once Wanny took over and started trading away draft picks like he was allergic to them Miami has put fool after fool in charge of the draft.

Wanny was given a very good defense from JJ but he messed up every draft he was in charge of. I still believe the JJ way was the best. Move down when possible and get as many picks as you can. If you hit of half your picks only then fine....draft 4 players and you'll hit on 2 but when you draft 10 you might hit on 5 of them and that's how you build a winner fast. Of course tanne-dumb already traded away our 3 and 4 next year so we're in a hole already thanks to his dumb trade

31 other teams have draft sheets that look just like that.
